    Peavy?

Maybe it's because the free-agent market is so bleak, or maybe it's because a lot of the general managers now are in the same age range of 30 to 45 and have more in common. Maybe it's because the sport is thriving, flush with money, and the teams are better financial standing. These are not days of desperate attempts to unload bad contracts.

Whatever the reason, the trade talk between teams has been exceptional during these meetings, some executives say, in volume and in the nature of the conversations that are taking place. General managers and assistant GMs and scouts have talked in the lobby, at the hotel bar, while exercising together. "There's really just a great sense of trying to find middle ground," said an AL general manager. "There is a lot of open exchange of ideas."

In other words, a lot of conversations that go along these lines: This is how I see a deal working for me, and this is how I see it working for you. It is within this vein that the Padres and Yankees talked briefly about a possible deal that almost certainly won't happen (Jake Peavy for Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera), and it's within this vein that teams are now openly shopping their best and youngest pitchers. "They're reading the market place and seeing that there is no pitching available [in free agency]," said another GM, "and figuring they'll find out what teams are prepared to offer for pitching." In other words, it doesn't hurt to see what somebody will give you for a Kazmir, a Lee, a Garza, a Lincecum.

if the Padres trade Jake (and that's a big if) it won't be till next year.

He still has 2 years left on his contract. (if you include his team option)
