2008 All-Star Game to be Played at Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium will be the site of the 2008 All-Star Game, sources in baseball said, in the last year of the ballpark.

The new Yankee Stadium is scheduled to open in 2009, and old Yankee Stadium closed, 86 years after the ballpark was first built in 1923, and 33 years after the ballpark was remodeled on the same site in 1976. With the All-Star Game slated to be in an AL park in 2008, officials chose Yankee Stadium for the site, believing it to be an appropriate way to usher out the historic building.

The All-Star Game has been held in Yankee Stadium three times previously, the last time in 1977.

An announcement on the selection of Yankee Stadium is expected in the days ahead, perhaps next week, with Major League Baseball coordinating with the Mayor's office in New York.

Next summer's All-Star Game will be played in San Francisco, and on Monday night, Commissioner Bud Selig formally announced that the 2009 All-Star Game will be played in St. Louis
Awesome...I will definitely try to get tickets to this.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

Uh ok? They announced the site of the 2009 game before the 2008 game? How does this make sense? Oh yeah, it's Bud Selig we're talking about.

That is cool. I am not a Yankee fan, obviously! But I do like a lot of your players. I am still in disbelief that Big George is tearing that place down. As much as it kills me to say this, but baseball is NOT going to be the same, IMO. That stadium is like a shrine, just like Fenway and Wrigley. I now the times are different, and every team wants state of the art facilitiy, but these previously mentioned stadiums are like a musuem. I have never been to Yankee Stadium, but I am going to try like hell to get there before teh tear that place down!!!! My goal is to get to every stadium of MLB teams! I am about 20-25% of the way there.

Even though I'm a Yankee hater, I wouldn't want to see it get torned down. Just too much history in that stadium.

it's nice to get the ASG but it's very sad to see that ballpark come down a few mos later. I don't want the new Stadium.

As far as going, the folks w/ season tix you still may not be able to go. Only a very small amount of ticket holders will have the opportunity to buy ASG tix and it will be th corporate ticket holders not the reg fan.

Maybe you should be worrying about other things...like Francisco Liriano's elbow.

ha ha. I will give you the match, heck I will light it for you as well then you can burn it.

Liriano I am not worried about. We new about the injury along time ago. Twins doctors choked again on the injury. But thats all good. We still have the best sp in the game in Santana.

IMO, I don't how much some one loves or hates a particular team. It is just a crying shame to see historical landmarks be torn down. Ask Celtics/Bruins fans how they feel now that the Garden is gone. Boston has not propered much in the Fleet Center. If you love baseball or sports, these landmarks should at the very least remain open as a muesum/tourist attraction for the enthusists (sp). The TRUE sport/baseball fan would and can appreciate history, even if it is the arch rival or the team you can't stand or your beloved team! Again, let me repeat, I am NOT a Yankee fan! I just apprecaite what that place means to baseball and even history itself!

Well said. The new Stadium will undoubtedly be gorgeous and a great place to watch a ball game, but the old Yankee Stadium is part of a dying breed. Most of the great ballparks are dying out and it's going to be very sad to see this one go, just as it will be when Fenway and Wrigley go.

thanks. that is how passionately I feel about sports and its history. I may not like a team, players, or their stadium, but respect and understanding is important and should be remembered forever!!!! Sports have a major impact on my life way beyond the game/sport that I happen to be watching.
