Sorry that this had to happen. Why not have in a players contract your not able to pilot airplanes or hi speed motocycles? There are to many guys being injuried or killed! Big Ben could have very will have died.
All I am saying is during your playing career there should be a stipulation stating no flying airplanes on your own! Who else needs to die for these owners to figure things out! That's the 2nd yankee I know of.

I wondered the same thing.
To fly a private plane, as he was, requires a license, which he had. The skills required to get this license make flying a relatively safe method of travel. His flying was done in the off season, so it did not interfere with his training or pitching schedule.
I doubt if any player that is a licensed pilot would allow a clause to be put into a contract saying they could not fly a plane. It would be like a licensed driver being told he couldn't drive a car.
All this said, it is a sad day for baseball fans. Cory Lidle was not going to be a Hall of Famer. He was not in line for any awards for excellence. He was a good, not great, major league pitcher whose life ended too early.

Actually, word from some top experts is that there was a hole in the tank, or the tank wasn't properly filled, and that neither pilots noticed until it was too late. That's why there wasn't a larger fire, and a bigger explosion...
