    Mets Delgado Has Elbow Tendonitis

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Carlos Delgado has tendinitis in his left elbow and could miss Puerto Rico's first game in the World Baseball Classic against Panama on Tuesday.

"I'm a little sore," the New York Mets' first baseman said Monday. "This is a super important event, but if you're not in the necessary condition, you've got to be smart."

The slugger said he was still undecided about whether he would play against Panama. Asked if he could play if the game was Monday, he replied: "No."

Delgado was to receive treatment and make his decision Tuesday.

The injury kept Delgado out of the lineup on Sunday for an exhibition game between the Puerto Rican team and the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The same elbow that kept Delgado out for much of August, and almost caused him to need Tommy John surgery. I knew he was a risk for the Dodgers because of this, and even though its tendonitis, large problems always start out with pain that is thought of being tendonitis. My thoughts, for both the Mets and Delgado, is to drop out of the WBC and have a specialist take a close look at this elbow. Delgado will be important if the Mets are to have any shot at making the Wild Card, and all precautions need to be taken, especially if Tommy John was an option at one point.
