"It's just exciting to think about a 1-2 punch of Reyes and Furcal, in any order," Wright said. "Those guys provide so much of a spark, they bring so much speed to a game, and you wouldn't get any better defensively up the middle than those two. If [Furcal] can play there, and he wants to come to New York, we'll welcome him with open arms. That's fun to think about. That's almost like fantasy baseball right there, those two in the same infield."

The Mets would love to lure Furcal to play second, but it's more likely he'll want to stay at shortstop, and other teams, such as the Cubs, will pay him to do so if the Braves decide against it.

Wagner is a different story. Money could be the determining factor for the free-agent closer, and the Mets, who already have visited his home in Charlottesville, Va., could have the inside track. That sounds great to Wright, who has faced Wagner only once - and whiffed.

"What I know about Billy Wagner is that, personally, I hate facing him," Wright said. "Other hitters do too, so if we could land a guy of that caliber, it would be tremendous for us."
The Mets always seem to be players in the offseason the last few years, but not all of their moves work out how they expect them to.
