Mets Where will Jose Reyes ultimately end up?

Reyes has been probably the hottest hitter on the planet lately, perhaps fueled in part by a contract year AND Fred Wilpon ...kinda hitting below the belt. But no matter, Reyes is currently batting over .340 and has an OBP nearing .400. And he's slugging over .500. Lead off man, number 3 hitter, basically the point is, if the Mets are to consider trading him, there should be several teams jumping in line.

I am watching the Reds and Giants play as I type this, and those are two of the teams rumored and two teams that could use a better rounded shortstop, or in San Francisco's case, offense period. Or does Reyes stay a Met?

Edit: I randomly threw Seattle out there for fun.

Right now the Mets sit 5.5 out of the WC so their season isn't over yet. Too early to say right now.

I'd be happy to eat crow if they end up making the playoffs and stand above the Marlins, Braves, and Phillies.. or at least 2/3. So with that said, ain't happenin'

IF Pujols were to not stay with the Cardinals, I could see them making a run at Reyes. Other than that, I would see the Giants and Reds as obvious possibilities.

I'm biased, but I think the Mets will end up finding the money to bring him back and avoid the utter fan mutiny. I can't see them trading him, because I don't think anyone will offer what he's worth.

Fan mutiny? A prime example of why GM's shouldn't listen to the masses. The Mets should strip the team and start fresh but they won't.

They should sell off a lot of their parts, but Reyes is not one of them. Sell off a 28 year old star just entering his prime? It's not like the Mets are decades from winning. Build around Reyes, Wright, Ike Davis, Jon Niese, Dillon Gee. Sell off the Beltrans, the K-Rods, the Santanas even...keep the core of players in their prime.

Reyes will bring you the most back in talent but keeping him will take a chunk of the payroll. The Krod's, Beltran's and Santana's will not be much in terms of talent so the Mets would have to do more. The Mets aren't decades from winning but they're not that close either. Alderson working from scratch will help.

Re: Where will Jose Reyes ultimately end up?

Yes, keeping him will take up some of the payroll, but not all that much more than the $9 million he already makes. You shed the payroll that's not necessary (48 million from Beltran, K-Rod, Oliver Perez, and Luis Castillo) and re-invest that in Reyes AND another player or two. Then, you build around one of the best SS in the game, one of the best 3B in the game, a very good young 1B, 2 good young SP's, and your farm system which is climbing in the ranks.

We're not going to agree, and that's fine. I just think that you're never going to be able to replace the talent Reyes brings, and when you have him as a big market club, you keep him and build around him, because the Mets can build a winning team around him.

Re: Where will Jose Reyes ultimately end up?

You might not be able to replace Reyes but you can fill a lot more holes by trading him since its no lock he will re-sign with the Mets. Reyes can say all day long he wants to stay in NY, tons of players do that that sign elsewhere.

We'll see how it all works out. Neither of us know what Reyes or the Mets really want. At the end of the day, my strategy would be to build around him.
