Mets NY Mets News, Notes, and as always- Injuries Thread

It's getting too difficult to make a separate thread for every one of the mounting Mets injuries this year, so every Mets injury, updates will be posted here:

1B Carlos Delgado- Impingement in hip, Bone Spur in hip, Possible Torn Labrum-Had Surgery May 19th- Could be back late July or August.

SS Jose Reyes- Tendinitis in Calf- DL Retroactive to May 21- Could be back within a week or 2.

RF Ryan Church- Strained Hamstring- DL Retroactive to May 23- Hamstrings are always a question, but could be back in about 2 weeks.

IF Alex Cora- Torn Tendon in Thumb- DL, Rehabbing in AAA right now, did not need surgery, and will likely be able to return to the majors by the end of this coming week.

OF Angel Pagan- Just left today's game with "Right Groin Discomfort". Hanley Ramirez had the same issue and missed only a couple games, but we don't know how serious this injury is. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

CF Carlos Beltran- Has a stomach virus, missing today's game (2nd straight). Hopefully he'll be ok to return to game action tomorrow or the next day.

SP Oliver Perez- Knee Tendinitis, on DL, attempting rehab in Port St. Lucie. His tendinitis prevented him from pitching much in AAA, so no one knows when he'll be back. Not sure how good or bad this is.

SP John Maine- Just left the game with apparent injury. Not sure what is wrong, but he had only thrown about 80 pitches through 6 solid innings. Just what the Mets need right now, ANOTHER injury.

Update on Maine: Apparently Beltran's stomach virus is spreading around the clubhouse, and that's what has taken Maine out of the game. Hopefully it's just a couple day thing, and anyone who caught it will be fine and ready to play at full strength soon.

Amazingly enough, the Mets are 10-8 since Delgado went on the DL, and 7-2 since Church and Reyes went on the DL. Incredible that they can continue to win without 3 HUGE parts of their lineup.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

Angel Pagan will likely have an MRI today, after suffering a right groin injury running down a fly ball during the fourth inning yesterday.

Jerry Manuel did not sound positive when talking to reporters about Pagan after the game, essentially saying this type of injury often ends up being more than just a day-to-day thing.

This really stinks for pagan, who looked very good last April, then hurt his shoulder and missed the rest of the season, and who looked good the last week or so, finally getting another chance to play everyday, and then this… out again… plus, he is turning out to be an important part of this team, filling in for a banged-up beltran, playing the corners, leading off for Jose Reyes, etc…

Jose Reyes will leave for St. Lucie this evening, when the team departs for Pittsburgh.
Reyes will likely play in a minor-league rehab game on Tuesday and Wednesday, after which he’ll be reevaluated on Thursday by team doctors.

Jerry Manuel told reporters before today’s game that he hopes to get Reyes back on Friday, the day he is eligible to come off the DL.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

Beltran misses another game with the stomach bug....as I said the last 2 days, he hopes to be back in the lineup tomorrow.

Pagan is on the 15 day DL with a strained right groin.

Cora will return from rehab tomorrow, if everything goes well. Hopefully his thumb is ok.

Sheffield has a sore left hammy...hopefully that doesn't get worse, because we'd have no one left in the lineup.

Oliver Perez is still getting treatment on his knee, no timetable on his next rehab start.

Finally, although there is no medical worry yet, I believe something is wrong with JJ Putz. He had the elbow/neck issues earlier, and while he was back to normal for a few weeks, both his velocity and control are VERY inconsistent right now, which leads me to believe either the elbow or neck (or something else) is bothering him right now. I hope I'm wrong, and he's just got a mechanical problem, but I'm not buying that as of now.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

    Cora activated from DL

Maine and Beltran still sick with the stomach "bug", Beltran to miss his 3rd straight game.

Church and Reyes were unable to play extended spring training games today due to rain, and will likely play in one tomorrow.

An SNY(Mets Cable Station for those who don't know) Producer apparently has swine flu....and while Beltran and Maine are not showing "swine flu symptoms", it cannot be ruled out at this time that they COULD have swine flu. JUST ****ING GREAT.

SS Ramon Martinez left tonight's game with a "dislocated left pinky finger". Not sure how long that injury will keep him out, but it's just another in a long line of injuries for the Mets. In fact, he's the 3rd SS on the Mets to miss time this year.

Reyes suffered a setback today, took himself out of an extended ST game.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

Jerry Manuel said, from what he’s been told, Jose Reyes did not tear anything in his calf, and could still be back in time for the series against the Phillies next Tuesday.

Manuel said Gary Sheffield will not play during tomorrow’s day game, acknowledging that a rainout tonight was not the worst thing for the overall health of his team.

Ramon Martinez will likely go on the DL for his dislocated left pinky, and will likely be replaced on the roster with Emil Brown.

Ryan Church played in an extended spring training game, and felt "better". We'll see when he's healthy enough to come back.

Oliver Perez pitched from flat ground today. Still no timetable on his return.

Despite losing 5-10 pounds from his stomach bug, Beltran was in the starting lineup tonight, and was ready to play CF and bat 3rd. He should be fine to start tomorrow, the only question remaining is rustiness.

Beltran, despite losing 5-10 pounds from his illness, he returned to the lineup today with a double off the wall, a walk, and a BOMB of a HR (in his first 3 at bats). I think he's healthy.

What did I tell you guys:

J.J. Putz is headed to New York to have his sore right elbow examined and Newsday's David Lennon writes that "surgery seems like the logical next step."

Putz is bothered by a bone spur in his elbow that doesn't allow him to finish pitches. "I'm not following through because it hurts," Putz said. Putz lost his eighth-inning responsibilities to Bobby Parnell on Wednesday.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

“Jose Reyes has a tear in his right hamstring tendon,” reports SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt on Twitter.

Reyes will rest for the next two days, then be reevaluated.

…from what i can gather, it is a slight tear in his right hamstring, and it’s quite likely he is out through the All Star break, and probably longer than that… what’s worse, it appears he did this, separate from the calf issue, during the extended spring training game…

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, following the game, J.J. Putz told reporters he will go to New York tomorrow for a medical exam, saying he may end up needing surgery.

Putz said his elbow still hurts, and he’s unable to pitch without pain, writes Newsday’s David Lennon on Twitter.

Putz recieved an anti-inflammatory shot earlier in the season in connection with a bone spur in his elbow.

In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Bart Hubbuch writes, “Putz had planned to have surgery after the season to fix the bone spur, but he admitted today that the surgery might need to be moved up now.”

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

Ryan Church played six pain-free innings during an extended spring training game yesterday in St. Lucie.

Church is likely to be activated on Sunday, when he is first eligible to return from the disabled list.
