    Mets Mets Sign 5th Starter

Redding agrees in principle with Mets on $2.25 million deal : All Things Rockies Colorado

No, it's not the news everyone's been waiting for. We have not (yet) signed Derek Lowe or Ollie Perez, but we have signed one of the two starters we will need. Tim Redding agreed to a 1 year, 2.25 million dollar deal to be our 5th starter. He won 10 games with the Nationals last year, including a 3-1 record against the Phillies. Not a bad signing, and for a cheap one year deal, I'm happy with it. Now, we just need to sign one more starter(preferably Lowe, but Perez would be fine too), and our pitching staff as a whole will look much more complete than last year.

Maybe its me, but Redding seems like the total 1 yr wonder, why wouldn't you guys go after a proven guy like Byrd who would probably cost less and will always keep you in games and eat innings?

You think Paul Byrd who made 7.5 million dollars last year was going to take less than 2.25 million? Redding proved himself last year after having spent his career either in Minute Maid Park(hitter's park), or being sent to bullpen by the Padres and Yankees. He's a 5 starter, we will still sign a Lowe or Perez, and worst case scenario, Jon Niese will be looking to improve and become the eventual 5 starter anyway.

Plus, Byrd is 7 years older.
