    Free Agent Closer Option

Nationals sent RHP Chad Cordero, RHO Ryan Wagner and infielder Pete Orr outright to Triple-A Syracuse.
They'll all become free agents. Cordero was informed by the Nats of the decision to non-tender him after he underwent shoulder surgery. He hopes to be ready for 2009, but it's way too early to know whether he's going to regain his stuff. He'll probably have to settle for an incentive-laden one-year deal. Wagner and Orr will look for minor league contracts.
I would look into Chad Cordero as a cheap option to fix up the bullpen. If he can come back from his shoulder problem, he can still be helpful to plenty of teams...

Mets using Washington cast offs as closers? That's so unlikely!
    Marshall: MILSWANCAs?

    Re: Closer Option

I knew the jokes would be coming, except Ayala was never a closer, Cordero actually was, and was quite successful. If he can get back to the way he once was, he could be an excellent cheap pick up...

I wasn't going to mention anything to avoid ruffling any feathers, but now that the cat is out of the bag...

At least Cordero is better than Ayala. There's that.

Suppose they're begging Graeme Lloyd to come out of retirement?

Ugueth Urbina (my favorite player of all-time) is due out of jail in a few years. He has closer experience.

    Re: Closer Option

Exactly my point. I wouldn't sign Cordero to a long term expensive deal, but if he has anything left, I'd give him a spring training invite, minor league contract, maybe something major league contract, but less than 1 million. Incentives obviously being involved.

He and Burgos would make great pals.

    Re: Closer Option

Cordero can't really hack it as a closer anymore in my opinion, but he'd be a great 7th or 8th guy. He's still got good stuff, assuming his shoulder is ok.

Like Reefer said, it doesn't hurt the bullpen.

There's not much more hurtin' you could do to this pen, unless it was signing Jeff Nelson or something

Cordero is 26. What do you mean he can't hack it "anymore"?
