Thread: Mets offered Willis for Wright

Mets Mets offered Willis for Wright

Sometime within the last several weeks, the Marlins offered Dontrelle Willis to the Mets for David Wright, according to Newsday.
That wasn't going to work. Willis for Jose Reyes would have been more realistic, though the Marlins now have Hanley Ramirez and the Mets probably would have turned it down anyway. As inexpensive as he is right now, Wright might be the game's most valuable property. Albert Pujols is the only obviously better bet for the next five years, and he'll make $77 million during that time.

I'd do Reyes for Willis, but I wouldn't ever send Wright for Willis.

Doesn't hurt the Marlins to try. After all, the Mets did make Victor Zambrano for Scott Kazmir.

The Mets would always do Reyes for Willis, because Reyes sucks.

But Dontrelle isn't LATINO. And to Minaya, that's all that matters.

I wouldn't do Reyes for Willis if I were the Marlins, even if they didn't have Hanley

I would do Wright for Willis in a heartbeat. You can always find third baseman, but you can't always find Cy Young caliber pitchers who are only 24.

Jose Valentine is definitely no David Wright, but to have a rotation headlined by Pedro, Dontrelle Willis, and Tom Glavine he'd do perfectly fine at third base for the Mets.

Exactly. I don't even know why Marlins would do this. Yah, "save money." But do the Marlins really need to save money? Their payroll is what? 10 mill. I'm sure they can afford what Willis is going to ask for.

I'd keep Wright over Willis thank-you-very-much

You can't just go and find any third baseman. Before Wright the Mets had Ventura, Alfonzo and Wigginton. Wright is the future face of the Mets and the kid has power. He too is 24 and through 246 games he has 44 homeruns. Oh yeah and he is awesome with the glove too. No way I give him up for Willis who is pretty damn good himself.

Well, for the Mets I wouldn't do it for the simple fact they can buy them a SP in FA, although they may not be able to get one of Willis's caliber at the age of 24. It's a hard one to think through being that Wright is the soon-to-be poster child of the Mets. If that proposal really happened, I guarantee you Minaya didn't give an instant "no thanks", he probably sat back in his lazy boy debating the deal before he realized the Mets fans would put a hit out on him.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

Pitching wins championships. And if you want someone to replace Wright, then how about asking the Marlins if they would trade Cabrera for some other prospects.

Wright>Cabrera at third! Mets have the money to get pitching. They can possibly just sign Willis next year.

    Willis isn't a FA though.

If I am the Marlins, I would trade Willis for Wright. Willis doesn't impress me as much as a guy like Verlander does.
