I wouldn't exactly call either guy a top SP.
And it's an unfortunate quirk in OOTP. It seems to happen at least once or twice a season, player sends an email like that and still takes that many years elsewhere. Just like the shit with PA, his player taking a better deal even though his offer was more cash.
