I think Gehrig should receive some compensation but no way type A. He should get like a 4.0 cause of his age. I know his ratings are great but we have no idea if he'll just randomly die soon. I respect anything Leo decides cause I haven't had a problem with anything he has done so far.
To be clear, this was my idea alone.

I mean, I guess I may not have made it had OM not questioned Gehrig, but at the same time I made the decision (which isn't even final...just brainstorming out loud sorta) on my own because I like it.

As for Gehrig, he'd be a type B if I gave him something which is a low tier 5.0....but I'd also consider lowering that maybe for the older ones? But I'd think he at least warrants a good 4.5.

The whole not knowing if he'll die soon part is why I'd tie it to the GM risking signing him long term.

I thought you meant offers in extensions up there.

People get overpaid all the time in free agency. I definitely wouldn't want to tie come directly to that, lol.

In other words, if I receive long-term offers for Gehrig in free agency then he warrants it. If the market determines nobody wants to take that gamble in spite of his performance due to age then maybe not.

Or I can combine the two and decide on a minimum number of long term offers that are required and the extension offer can count as one of them?
That's why I said you should use AAV bands, makes life a lot easier and let's the market determine things.

I like the idea of just doing it baseball's way with a certain level denoting a comp chance or not. Maybe combine that with AAV or total value. So you combine the market and the original GM's intent into one idea.

I am baffled as to why you would say I am "making a big deal" out of anything in this thread.

And 99 times out of 100 a pending free agent is going to turn down a 1 year offer if you're suggesting treating it similar to the new MLB system.
The easy way around it would be to make it instead of 1 year, make it total value. So, say, 1 yr 15 or 2 at 7.5 a pop, etc etc. No one wants to get stuck with old guys, so there's protection in there. And yeah, the original GM would actually have to want to keep the player in that case, but, that's part of the point. As for Chipper and Gehrig, that's where you can use total value to pull them apart because even if they're close in AAV, they won't be in total value, and AAV can work for the older guys. Maybe make it a 3 tiered system. C if you meet 1 criteria, B if you meet 2, A if you meet all 3. So Chipper would meet all 3. Gehrig I bet meets 2

And a lot less fair relative to real player value, which is what I care about more.

Also harder on my side of things.

If you over pay somebody in free agency suddenly his comp worth is higher.

Conversely, if somebody flies under the radar and gets a cheap contract he doesn't get comped well.

I'm not a fan of tying compensation directly to OOTP contract offers.

It's different in real life where it's tied to the team giving a one year qualifying offer that the player can either accept or decline allowing for comp.

People would have to overpay enough to break that threshold though. I know there are overpayments, but to that degree?

Every league, there's a handful every year. Guaranteed.
