i've never actually owned the game so no i have no idea
I am lost a bit now.
Does coaches simply mean for MoMo to have the game do the automatic roster moves? No clue what 5s mean
When you go into spring training, you can have your players focus on improving aspects of their game, such as becoming a better contact hitter, power hitter, better plate discipline, learning a new position, throwing harder, having better control, more endurance, etc.
Each category has a standard 5, and you are able to take away from one area to improve another. The risk is, the player can lose talent in one area to maybe improve in another. You can manually pick and choose, you can run the coaches option (it will adjust the settings for what it feels a player needs to improve on) or you can leave it at all 5's.
I personally think it's more of a waste of time, but some will say it works. I've seen my players lose endurance or speed on their pitches for nothing for example.

I will chime in and agree with KOZ. I think clicking the "ask the coaches" button is a horrible and detrimental option that OOTP has decided to move away from in later versions... matter of fact I don't think they do ST in anything after 6.5, but I am not 100% sure.
In the OOTP 6.5 ST screen, it has four training categories for hitters (contact, power, eye, defense) and pitchers (stuff, control, velocity, stamina). The default setting is 5 for each category per player.
The "Ask the Coaches" button will try to make that particular player even in all categories. For example, Adam Dunn has 6 contact, 10 power, 10 eye, and 2 defense. The Coaches button would automatically change his 5-5-5-5 ST setting to something like a 9-2-2-7 setting. Conversely, I have a SS named Smithson in HSL. He is a prototypical lead-off hitter. If I clicked coaches, the AI would take away from his contact and defense and try to make him into more of a power hitter.
I HATE the coaches button. Some of us have learned through research on the OOTP boards and elsewhere that if you have a hitter with little power, why waste 5 points on power? If you have a guy you are primarily going to DH, why waste 5 points on his defense? Some people are slick enough to change a player with multiple defensive positions to the position you do NOT plan on playing him at, then taking his 5 defense points and putting them to contact or power, then switching him back to the other defensive position that you wish to play him primarily at. The catch here is that if the player does not have 4-5 points in a particular category, he will lose ratings in that category and his ST report will indicate that. Most players will not show a marked difference because the change is only visible on a 1-100 scale and not on a 1-10 scale.
This is nice to take advantage of if you have a pitcher with high velocity or endurance, you can put the points to work in the stuff and control categories. Remember DJ used to swear up and down that velocity was a useless category. He was more right than wrong but not completely right. Velocity enhances stuff and control, but a 8-7-8 with 88-91 velocity will be better than a 7-6-7 with 96-99 velocity.
The point to remember is!!!! Don't swamp your Commish with manual changes. The vast majority of them do not work in one year anyway. If we went to a 1-100 scale, you could see changes, but most of the time, it takes years to make a non-effective pitcher effective. I primarily use it on guys with no power anyway, or guys with too much eye, like the AI tends to create in all 6.5 leagues.
I try to stick to manual adjustments for about 10 players per season for MoMo. Leaving the rest at 5-5-5-5 is by far your best option, or you will change a 9-7-3-8-8 hitter into a 7-7-7-7-7 hitter by asking the dumb coaches.
Just some thoughts from the OOTP Peanut Gallery!
