Post-deadline waivers beginning 2072? (Discussion, please respond)

It was suggested to me awhile ago to maybe find some way to beef up action in the last two sims since there's no trading right now with the way things are set up. So what if we introduced some kind of waiver system?

Below are the rules for Major League Baseball (per Wikipedia)

Any player under contract may be placed on waivers ("waived") at any time. After MLB's July 31st at 4 pm trade deadline and through to the end of the season, a team must place a player on waivers if that player is to be traded. If a player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, the team with the weakest record in the player's league gets preference. If no team in the player's league claims him, the claiming team with the weakest record in the other league gets preference. In the first month of the season, preference is determined using the previous year's standings.
If a team claims a player off waivers and has a viable claim as described above, his current team (the "waiving team") may choose one of the following options:

    • arrange a trade with the claiming team for that player within two business days of the claim; or
    • rescind the request and keep the player on its major league roster, effectively canceling the waiver; or
    • do nothing and allow the claiming team to assume the player's existing contract, pay the waiving team a waiver fee, and place the player on its active major league roster.

If a player is claimed and the waiving team exercises its rescission option, the waiving team may not use the option again for that player in that season—a subsequent waiver would be irrevocable with a claiming team getting the player essentially for nothing.[6] If no team claims a player off waivers after three business days, the player has cleared waivers and may be assigned to a minor league team, traded (to any team), or released outright.

I'd likely not include any option where you just give up the player and allow the other team to just take on the contract, but that can be open for discussion if others feel differently.... as well as doing this at all. So let me know.

The game won't let me trade after the deadline but there's manual ways to work around it. I'd still tinker with it before officially giving this a go however to see if the trouble would be worth my while.

    1 question

How long is the waivers period? Ex. I place someone on waivers -- we sim 20ish days typically so we'd need to have it be over that --it sounds like really time consuming for you and im not sure if its worth the squeeze -- we could sim faster (or more often) to also deal with people losing interest.

I'd probably have to give it a few days for threads to be posted and GMs to post claims and then give them a deadline to work a deal so it'd likely delay the last two sims a little, so that's definitely a drawback to take into consideration.

No. Just like in real life the major league contracts would have to go through waivers and then a deal can be worked from there.

Although now that I think of it it would kind of pigeon-hole you into having to only take prospects and picks or wait for another waiver wire and hope the opposing trade partner wins, so this is definitely something we'd have to work out the kinks in if we want to do it.

On that regard it'd probably be easiest to say it'd have to be a vet-for-specs deal.

I think the game would require you to release the player. The AI can do some crazy shit because he considers himself a free agent. You’ll have to manually edit the finances of the team that paid the rest of his contract when they released him. Then, he may say he doesn’t like the new team and refuse to sign. The player may have outrageous demands that you’ll have to agree to and then edit back to what you want. Either way it will be incredibly complicated and I think not worth it.

Sim the remainder of the season in one sim after 7/31!

Essentially this would just be a means for the silly folk who hand out wonderfully dumb contracts in hopes someone will claim them. Which would be great in a sense but I have no doubt with our crop of peeps, there would be a, and this is only an example, a Johnny Blaze for zilch or Blaze for a single A 33 year old scrub trade attempt. And while I'd never pay Blaze 22 mill, he's still a great talent. Now maybe something like Harvey Dent for a bag of fruit pie or let's say suddenly Mama Madrigal became a 36yr old dumpster fire and hammer waived her and she was claimed or dealt for again, fruit pies, those make sense. The TC would have to monitor things (lol).

And also as OM points out, you'll have additional work to make things work. It could be a fun wrinkle but would it be for you.

I've thought about that and if that's the case I probably wouldn't do it. But I think I remember making some kind of error one time post-deadline that resulted in someone being released or something, maybe cutting the wrong player I forget, and then I couldn't re-sign him because he didn't like the team. I believe I found a way to allow post-deadline trades to fix it IIRC.

I'll have to wait until I'm able to get on the game to check though.

TC guidelines/policy/trade challenging would still be in play for any proposed trade, so there's that.

As for simming the rest of the season all at once. Part of me likes the idea, part of me worries about the added impact to a team that suffers a key injury to a player early on in the sim and now they're having to succumb to the whims of the AI for the playoff run.

It would be fun to see a couple teams re-enact the James Loney for Nick Punto and other people blockbuster, but I agree that the manual work may be more trouble for you than it's worth.

i would also tend to believe that this is gonna end up being more trouble for you personally, than it might be worth. you could try it out for a season, and see how much extra work it is for you, i suppose.

also, i would be on board if you just let the claiming team take him for nothing, if the waiving team wanted. it would probably just lead to a dump for 1 star single a prospect anyway.

Nah. Too much work and likely to cause more delays.
