Mets 2054 SP FA Cost / Benefit Analysis

A brief analysis bent in my favor to demonstrate how I got more out of a cheaper (greedy prick now) SP compared to the two more expensive / sought after SPs (one wouldn't talk to me and one took slightly more annually, but half as many years). All three pitchers have performed well. I am not in anyway saying these guys didn't perform. They just got out-performed at a fraction of the cost.

    Pitcher # 1
    SP Hyun-jin Ryu - signed for $13.5 mil x 4 years ($27 mil for 2054 / 2055).

    2054 / 2055 : 64 GS, 28 wins, 17 losses, 408 IP, 3.31 ERA, 451 hits, 18 homers, 48 walks, 206 K's, 1.22 WHIP, 2 CG / 2 SHO.

    Pitcher # 2
    SP Hisashi Iwakuma - signed for $9.7 mil x 3 years ($19.4 mil for 2054 / 2055).

    2054 / 2055 : 68 GS, 23 wins, 23 losses, 430 IP, 3.62 ERA, 466 hits, 42 homers, 54 walks, 291 K's, 1.21 WHIP, 3 CG / 3 SHO.

    Pitcher # 3
    SP Robert Greenly - signed for $2.1 mil x 2 years ($4.2 mil for 2054 / 2055).

    2054 / 2055 : 78 GS, 41 wins, 19 losses, 537 1/3 IP, 2.91 ERA, 437 hits, 34 homers, 216 walks, 482 K's, 1.215 WHIP, 7 CG / 3 SHO.

Greenly's 2-year cost was almost 1/5 of Iwakuma's cost and almost 1/7th of Ryu's cost. He had more GS, more wins, more IP, a lower ERA, less hits, more walks, and more K's than both pitchers. All three had virtually the same WHIP despite Greenly's walk total.

Where the other 2 will beat out Greenly is going forward. Obviously, they're younger and signed for longer. I just wanted to compare the 2 year period to the two SPs that spurned the pitching haven known as the New York Mets.

Damn it. I was hoping this was going to be the first chapter of your How to 6.5 Book.

Yea. But that doesn't change the 2-year stats that I was comparing. IIRC he was 7,10,9. That doesn't really have anything to do with what I was talking about.

See, if I would have signed Greenly he'd have a high 4 ERA with double the walks.

Truth. So let this be warning to all other GMs. Don't bother trying to sign him because he will stink for you.

Greenly sucked when he was on my team. Your defense definately skewed his numbers. He's not that good but is a great fit and has great value all in all

There were 16 teams with fewer errors than my team this year so I don't know how much defense helped this season. My SS had 33 errors lol.

He also covers a ton of ground. I'd rather have a high range SS and live with the errors than a statue.

Of course I platoon at SS with a statue that hits like a boss and a high range fielder that hits like Rey Ordonez.

True. I was just saying that going by errors, we had a middle of the road defense. OOTP 6.5 doesn't lend itself to advanced defensive metrics. Greenly struck out a lot of hitters, too so I just felt like saying it was because of my defense sort of takes away from what he did somewhat.

Defense sabermetrics or not, I can just skim over your ratings report and see mostly 7 or higher range ratings- with several 9's and 10's. I think it's safe to say you have a pretty good defense. Baltimore and the other New York tend to have a lot of high range players and they're usually two of the top in the AL.

I'd assume my RHP double play combo of Baker-Henderson missed out on getting to a lot of grounders
