6 picks in the top ten isn't luck. It's just suck.

No, but the development is certainly luck. I can't find the quote, but a MLB GM once said that you should either be contending or rebuilding, but something about being anywhere in-between is futile. BTW, not all six picks were a result of my record.

You went six seasons in a row of futility, that's pretty good patience. I hated life after only two seasons lol

Yeah, it was really only 3. 5 seasons under .500. '44 was the beginning and I was still trading for picks and prospects, IIRC. and in '48, I had some of the studs up in MLB, but not enough to win. Honestly, I got lucky with the development. Sure, there were some timely trades and FA acquisitions, but to be able to bring that many stud prospects up in '49 and '50 was straight up luck. (Now I hope I haven't jinxed myself.)

That was indeed luck on the development.

So, serious question for anyone with a good memory of this league's history.

    1) Who the hell signed Nomo for 8/$20M?
    2) I assume Nomo was, at that point, closer to a 10/10/10?
    3) Has he ever performed anywhere near being worth that salary?

He was 10-6-8 but that was when all gms overpaid for average players across the board. It was a huge deal and I agree with nomo not being worth it. But whoever signed him probably thought he had to overpay to get him

Right. It's not even so much the money (which is high -- highest paid P in baseball), but also the length. I'd never give a 27-28 year old SP an 8 year deal. At least it ends after this year...

I can't remember if there were other crazy offers on Nomo besides that one.

I'm pretty sure that was the only max offer, but there may have been a couple other 8 digit ones.

Amazingly, he's bounced around quite a bit despite the contract lol

Well it was nice of you to take him off my hands and then eventually unload him to Detroit.

I'd take Nomo back, for a pick.
