Molina's Sim League What makes a good closer?

Ok, so trolling around. I noticed a few stats that I'd never seen before and had a few questions...

First off: What makes a good closer in OOTP?

    CL Thomas Kirschner SVO: 33 BS:3 SV%: 90.9 Overall 7-6-7

    CL Ernest Jordan SVO:44 BS:9 SV%:79.5 Overall 10-10-10

    Second:

I have other MR on my team
SVO: 15 BS:4 SV%: 42.9 (wrong) and it says I only had 3 saves period with him.... why?

I've been told you want your best relievers as either the #1 MR or the #1 Setup so that you get more innings out of them.

Re: What makes a good closer?

All of this is opinion... Your best reliever should be your #1 MR because they typically log 100ish innings per season. You second best should be your closer. He hopefully will be Great in the clutch, but normal is usually ok, and suffers is ok once in a while. Your closer logs 60ish innings per season. Your setup should be your 3rd best reliever, and again clutch is preferrable. I think for relievers... stats should be weighed more heavily than you normally would for a SP/Hitter.

All this and a $1.00 will get you a bottle of water out of the vending machine....

What makes a good closer.. To quote mofo, one that throws strikes mother fucker. The best closers I've had dominated hitters and had high strikeout per nine inning ratios.

Of course there's always fluke years for closers. I think Mark Hendrickson had a good year in Hybrid, he was only 6-8-9 soft tosser

    Leo,

That's is who I got that concept from.

I have my 3rd best MR at my CL (Gonzalez) and my best MR (Tanaka) at MR #1

He even made the All Star Game.

Then I demoted him the next year.

And then theres David Weathers of this league....
    #26 James Davies

Would have more saves but a few times I had to let the game run the team for time purposes and the games hates one James Davies.

Re: What makes a good closer?

Eh, I ascribe to my own philosophy. Sometimes I'll put my best as closer and setup #2. Sometimes I'll put him as MR #2 and setup #1 or MR #1 and setup #2.

In S3SL Lepe has had 81.1, 92, 138, and 93 innings with some combo of closer only and closer / setup #2.

In HSL Zaragoza was MR and setup to get 110.2 innings. Baptista logged 71 as closer only (62.1, 81, and 90.2 in his other seasons with me).

It just depends on how you want to do it and how your season plays out. If you're going to be a good team, then I'd stick my best as closer and occasionally at setup. If you're going to be a middle-of-the-road team or not good at all, you may as well stick him as your MR #1 and setup #2 to get the most out of him.

My best advice is to stock your pen with 2 or 3 studs so you don't have to really worry about it as much. If you have only one elite reliever and several chumps, then you've got bigger problems. Ideally, you'll have a couple options at closer.
