Mauer wants $25 million a season?

The Twins seem ready to give Mauer a deal unlike any it has offered any player before. But Mauer's side is apparently dragging its feet, making it seem like Mauer wouldn't mind seeing what he can do financially and on the field elsewhere.

The odds are still pretty high that Mauer will end up signing with the Twins but it doesn't seem as much a sure thing as it did a few weeks ago. The word is that the team has offered more than $20 milion a season but Mauer may want around $25 million annually and that isn't something the Twins really feel comfortable doing.

So Twins fans, have you heard anything beyond this story? I am just wondering how true it is.

Mauer has said that he has no interest in being the highest paid player in the bigs. He does, however, want to be properly compensated for his talents. I see the deal being about 10 years, $225M.
The Twins and Ron Shapiro (Mauer's agent) have a very good working relationship. He represented Kirby Puckett and Cal Ripken and got them very nice, long-term deals with their teams.

Mauer has to remain a Twin. He isn't quite Jeter a Yankee forever or Pujols a Cardinal forever, but he is second tier to that. But you never know, things could sneak up and surprise you.

And I really see Mauer being worth at least the $20 million offered. They will work out the kinks and probably meet in the middle somewhere between the two sides.

Mauer is the face of the Twins Franchise. 25 million a year for the best catcher in the league, well worth the money. Mauer's agent needs to accept the deal.

The Twins had the first pick in 2001 and took him because of signability. The Cubs had the 2nd pick.

Yup, the Twins were panned at the time for taking the signable local over the best pitcher in college history to that point. It was true, too. Just worked out better than they could have hoped.
