Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher Chris Narveson Has Surgery: Injury Report
By Ryan Christopher DeVault, Yahoo! Contributor NetworkOct 25, 9:56 pm EDT

Chris Narveson(notes) of the Milwaukee Brewers had to go through surgery on his left hip. Narveson is one of the young starting pitchers for the organization, and this could be a step back in his progression as a Major League player.

The expectation is that Narveson will attend Spring Training 2012, and that the surgery went well for the left-hander. This type of surgery will need a lot of rest before he can begin his rehabilitation period, but it isn't something that should derail his baseball career. After a long season with the team, the 29-year-old could certainly use a bit of a break from taking the mound.

During the 2011 regular season, Narveson started 28 games, going 11-8 for the Brewers. He had an ERA of 4.45 and 126 strikeouts over 161 2/3 innings, showing his value as a guy who could eat up a lot of innings for the organization. He didn't fare as well in the postseason though, where he came out of the bullpen for the Brewers. In six games, Narveson pitched just 7 1/3 innings, but gave up nine runs and five home runs that led to an ERA of 11.05.

Narveson made just $441,500 for the Brewers in the 2011 season, and still has one more year before he heads to arbitration. That makes him a very affordable option to have in the starting rotation, ensuring a spot on the team when he returns from rehab. The possibility exists that he could make it back in time for the beginning of Spring Training, and that he won't miss any action as a result of this surgery. That would certainly be the best-case scenario for Narveson , and it would allow the Brewers to focus on more important business this offseason.

The Brewers have to figure out what is going to happen with free agent first baseman Prince Fielder(notes), and if he is going to come back to the club for more years. He has Scott Boras as his agent, and is coming off a one-year deal worth $15.5 million in 2011. That made him the highest paid player on the Brewers, just ahead of starting pitcher Zack Greinke(notes) . If the team wants to stay competitive and try to improve for another run at the National League Playoffs, the first step is making sure that Fielder is suiting up in Milwaukee for many years to come.

Brewers decline options on K-Rod, Betancourt
    By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | 10/30/11 7:11 PM

MILWAUKEE -- Reliever Francisco Rodriguez and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt on Sunday joined a list of Brewers free agents that has grown to eight. Both players had options for 2012 -- Rodriguez's a mutual option and Betancourt's controlled by the club -- that were not exercised.
Betancourt and Rodriguez were included on a list released by the Major League Baseball Players Association on Sunday morning of nearly 150 free agents and later confirmed by a Brewers spokesperson.
Milwaukee's other free agents are first baseman Prince Fielder, infielders Craig Counsell and Jerry Hairston Jr., outfielder Mark Kotsay and relievers LaTroy Hawkins and Takashi Saito.

The Brewers own exclusive negotiating rights to all eight players until 11:01 p.m. CT on Wednesday, when those players are free to sign with any team.
The Brewers were widely expected all along to turn loose Rodriguez, whose contract was reworked after his July trade from the Mets to eliminate a clause that would have vested his $17.5 million option for 2012 had he finished 55 games. In return, the price of the buyout was boosted by $500,000, to $4 million.

Betancourt's deal called for a $6 million club option for 2012 or a $2 million buyout, and it had been unclear before Sunday which direction the Brewers would go. On one hand, Betancourt had the second-lowest on-base percentage (.271) among National League hitters who qualified for the batting title and the third-most errors (21) among NL shortstops. On the other hand, Betancourt drove in more runs (68) than any NL shortstop not named Troy Tulowitzki, and the Brewers do not have any clear candidates to take over that position.

"I thought Yuni Betancourt was a better player than what the critics had said," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said earlier this month. "I thought he did a very good job. If you look at the on-base percentage, that's the thing that always seems to hurt him. [Defensively] I thought he made a lot of very good plays, a lot of outstanding plays. ... I'm very surprised about some of the critics on him, personally."

The primary shortstop at Triple-A Nashville in 2011 was Edwin Maysonet, who has already signed a Minor League contract for 2012 that includes an invitation to big league Spring Training.
The list of free-agent shortstops who held starting jobs in 2011 includes Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins, Clint Barmes, Jamey Carroll and Alex Gonzalez. The list could grow to include the Cardinals' Rafael Furcal, the Red Sox's Marco Scutaro and the Pirates' Ronny Cedeno if chose clubs decline options.

It's now being reported the Brewers are going after Jose Reyes. I think that would be a smart move for the Brewers.

Doug Melvin Wins Award; Craig Counsell and
Mark Kotsay Depart: Brewer Fan Reaction

By Mark Hudziak, Yahoo! Contributor Network8 hours, 3 minutes ago

Milwaukee Brewers general manager and executive vice president Doug Melvin was named as a co winner of the 2011 Major League Baseball Executive of the Year award from the Sporting News. Melvin shared the award with Detroit Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski. This is a well deserved honor for Melvin, who went with a win now approach in personnel decisions in 2011, resulting in the Brewers winning
    the NL Central Division.

Instead of trading Prince Fielder(notes) before he could leave as a free agent, Melvin decided to keep the slugging first baseman and aggressively pursue the Brewers need for better pitching. His trades for Zack Greinke(notes) and Shaun Marcum(notes) over the winter turned the starting rotation into one of baseball's best, and his acquisition of reliever Francisco Rodriguez at the All Star Break solidified the bullpen. He took a chance on outfielder Nyjer Morgan(notes), and it paid off as Morgan provided some spark on offense, batting .304 in 119 games. He also picked up the versatile Jerry Hairston, Jr. down the stretch. Hairston filled in well at third base in the playoffs, replacing the slumping Casey McGehee(notes) and batting .385.

Melvin has assembled a good core group of players, and has several key players signed to multiyear deals. His biggest challenge over the winter will be in either signing Fielder or trying to figure out how to replace the big first baseman's run production.

Craig Counsell(notes) will not return to the Brewers in 2012
Melvin has informed Craig Counsell's agent that the utility infielder will not be offered a contract for 2012. At 41 years of age, Counsell is still a very good defensive infielder capable of playing multiple positions, but he hit just .178 in 107 games and I agree the Brewers need to seek infield help elsewhere.

This could mean the Brewers will make a push to sign Hairston, who is also a free agent. He can play multiple infield positions as well as the outfield, and has a decent enough bat. He hit .268 in 75 games with the Washington Nationals and .274 in 45 games with the Brewers in 2011.

    Mark Kotsay
(notes) signs with San Diego Padres

After one year in Milwaukee, free agent pinch hitter/outfielder Mark Kotsay signed a one year deal with San Diego Padres for 2012. This may mean that the Brewers will try to pick up another veteran who can pinch hit and play the outfield, or it could open up an opportunity for someone in the minor leagues like Logan Shafer. Shafer appeared in a few games in September for Milwaukee after hitting a combined .315 with three minor league teams.

Thank you for the wonderful years Craig. You will always be welcomed back into our ballpark.
As for Kotsay that was a hit or miss decision. Hopefully this is a sign that they will sign Hairston and possibly Nyjer Morgan will be here for a long time coming....

Brewers talking to Barmes and Rollins By Mark J. Miller

The Milwaukee Brewers are losing a humongous bat at first base as free agentPrince Fielder(notes) is looking more and more likely to head elsewhere. But the team has an young, inexpensive replacement for him in Mat Gamel(notes).

The position the team is looking to fill through a free agent signing is shortstop. GM Doug Melvin has spoken to the agent for Jose Reyes(notes), Paul Kinzer, a grand total of once this offseason, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. He also met with Barry Meister, the agent for Clint Barmes(notes), on Wednesday and is set to meet Thursday with the agent for Jimmy Rollins(notes),Dan Lozano, according to the Journal-Sentinel. Of course, the team could just end up re-signing Yuniesky Betancourt(notes).

"I said at the end of the year I'd be satisfied with having 'Yuni' back," said Melvin, the paper reports, though the team didn't pick up the $6 million option that would have sealed that deal at season's end.

-- I am really really really hoping they DO NOT bring Gamel up...The guy sucks IMO and does not deserve to replace Prince.

D12: Dale Sveum close to becoming Cubs next manager By 'Duk

'Duk's Dozen is a heaping morning serving of baseball items, links and takes — designed to keep you warm all offseason long.

    1.
Nothing is confirmed just yet, but multiple sources on Wednesday night had Dale Sveum all but signed to be the next prisoner in Wrigley Field's dungeon interview room. Sveum was most recently a coach with the Milwaukee Brewers, but also served time with the Boston Red Sox — a team that also called him in for a second interview. The Cubs apparently beat the Red Sox to the punch on this one, though it'll be interesting to see if the Red Sox make an 11th-hour offer or had decided to look elsewhere even before this news started to leak. Sun-Times

    2. Andy Dolan isn't so sure that the Cubs won anything here. He believes Sveum was the least-attractive option among the four men they interviewed and wonders why they'd opt for a manager who saw Ken Macha and Ron Roenicke hired ahead of him in Milwaukee. Desipio

    3. Thirteen teams are in on Mark Buehrle(notes)! I knew he'd make for an attractive alternative to signingC.J. Wilson(notes) but had no idea he'd become the market's version of Emma Stone. Popular because everyone thinks they have a shot. MLB Trade Rumors

    4. Ozzie Guillen swears the Florida Marlins don't have their fingers crossed as they pursue anyone and everyone without a contract for 2012. Fox Sports

    5. The NL Cy Young concludes this week's award announcements and Rob Neyer figures thatClayton Kershaw(notes) shouldn't wander too far from his phone. SB Nation

    6. The Mets have a few things lined up for their 50th anniversary. Amazin' Avenue

    7. Because it's never too early to consider next year's fantasy draft: A look at what the Tampa Bay Raysmight do with Matt Moore(notes) next season. Razzball

    8. Being restricted on the free agent market is always easier when you have a guy like Moore waiting in the wings. Or a full year of Desmond Jennings(notes), for that matter. DRaysBay

    9. Criminy. Are we really at a point where we're harassing writers for leaving Joe Maddon off the ballot for the manager of the year award he won anyway? Thank god I have a few hobbies — eating, sleeping, watching hockey — for the offseason. The Heater

    10. An update on Seattle Mariners prospect Danny Hultzen that's advertised as hot and sexy. I know link bait when I see it. But I will click anyway. Lookout Landing

    11. Ron Washington addressed the leaked Game 7 speech. Lone Star Ball

    12. If all goes right, the Atlanta Braves could see the Hall of Fame induction of Greg Maddux,Tom Glavine(notes), John Smoltz(notes) and Chipper Jones(notes) over the next decade. So what's one more? The team is starting a push to get Dale Murphy admitted into Cooperstown.Tomahawk Take
