Doesn't matter if you make a penny or millions, any player can get hurt any year for any amount of money.

Ok, what if in two or three or five years he just stops hitting and only provides glimpses of his former self? That with the injury possibility makes this deal dumb for a small market team like the Brewers.

The deal that they had him signed through 2015 was relatively cheap, and kept him around til he was 32. I guess I just don't see the rush to get a deal like this done.

it's a risk they have to take because if he doesn't get hurt and keeps mashing he'll be too expensive for them when the current deal runs out.

Its not a smart move by a small or big market team. Locking up a player now when you he was already locked up through 2014 is just an unnecessary move.

Not necessarily true but they could save a few million if he does pan out and stay healthy. They did not have to make this move now.

True. I was just putting that to add to my argument that it isn't as dumb for a big market to do this. A team like the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs wouldn't be as handcuffed if the player did get injured.

Meh, I can't see Braun making too much more than $19M per year when he's 32. Maybe like $22-24M if he stays healthy and keeps hitting.

They wouldn't be handcuffed but it would still hurt and still doesn't make it a wise move.

I'm not saying I agree with the move. I'm just saying that the reasoning behind it is that he's cheaper for those years if he doesn't get hurt or regress than he would be if they waited until the current one runs out.

You won't see big market teams make stupid gambles like this. Probably because MLB's financial system is broke.

No, I'm sure it's because they are run by competent GMs. The Brewers didn't have to make this gamble.
