    What A Terrible Contract

Florida Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera agreed Thursday to a one-year contract that will pay him $472,000 in the majors, meaning he'll likely be one of baseball's best bargains again this season.

Cabrera batted .323 with 33 home runs and 116 RBI in his third major league season last year. He'll be eligible for arbitration for the first time after this season.

"I'm happy," Cabrera said. "You have to put up your numbers every year and see what happens. My time is coming, you know?"

His contract calls for a $296,000 salary if he's in the minors.

Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre agreed to a contract that pays him $330,000 in the majors and $200,337 in the minors. The Marlins renewed the contract of left-hander Jason Vargas, 5-5 as a rookie last year, for the $327,000 minimum in the majors and $155,505 in the minors.

Every player on Florida's 40-man roster is under contract.
How can guys like Benson get $7 mil a year and guys who are actually good and produce day in and day out get shit? Marlins screwed this poor guy and hopefully goes elsewhere after this season where his talent can be appreciated.

He wasn't eligible for arbitration since he hasn't served enough time, so he can't get the big bucks yet.

He can hit the big bucks if he had an agent worth a ****. Just because he is not arbitration eligible doesn't mean this guy can't get paid. Anyone who puts up those numbers should be making more than Jeff Conine.

    Collective Bargaining Agreement:
    http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf#search='mlb%20collective%20bargain ing%20agreement'

    (1) No Player’s contract shall be renewed pursuant to paragraph
10(a) of the Uniform Player’s Contract in any year for a salary
which constitutes a reduction in excess of 20% of his previous
year’s salary or in excess of 30% of his salary two years previous.
For the purposes of this section, the “salary” of a Player with a
salary stipulated in paragraph 2 of his Major League contract of less
than the then applicable Major League minimum salary shall be
deemed to be the greater of either (a) the total amount of his actual
baseball salary earnings from Major League Clubs (and from Minor
League clubs if any) in that season or (b) the amount stipulated in
paragraph 2 of his Major League contract for that season.
    (2) The term “salary” shall include any salary amounts which
were not paid to a Player for the season by reason of any fine or suspension
which may have been imposed on the Player, or by reason
of any other deduction from salary.
    (3) In tendering a contract to a Player pursuant to paragraph
10(a) of the Uniform Player’s Contract, no Major League Club shall
offer a salary which constitutes a reduction in excess of 20% of the
Player’s previous year’s salary or in excess of 30% of his salary two
    years previous.

Shame that such a great player is being underpaid so greatly.

I know why he's got that contract, but doesn't change anything.

By the way, here's paragraph 10(a) of the Uniform Player's Contract.

Unless the Player has exercised his right to become a free agent as set forth in the Basic Agreement, the Club may retain reservation rights over the Player by instructing the Office of the Commissioner to tender to the Player a contract for the term of the next year by including the Player on the Central Tender Letter that the Office of the Commissioner submits to the Players Association on or before December 20 (or if a Sunday, then on or before December 18) in the year of the last playing season covered by this contract. If prior to the March 1 next succeeding said December 20, the Player and the Club have not agreed upon the terms of such contract, then on or before ten (10) days after said March 1, the Club shall have the right by written notice to the Player at his address following his signature hereto, or if none be given, then at his last address of record with the Club, to renew this contract for the period of one year on the same terms, except that the amount payable to the Player shall be such as the Club shall fix in said notice; provided, however, that said amount, if fixed by a Major League Club, shall be in an amount payable at a rate not less than as specified in Article VI, Section D, of the Basic Agreement.

i.e. the Marlins have the right to "renew" Miguel Cabrera for one year at a maximum of 30% more than his previous two years.

    Now stop b*tching.

I will quit *****ing never! Cabrera's not even making the allowed 30% increase. So I can still ***** about something. So how can Pujols get a significant raise and not Cabrera?
