Marlins Is Matt Dominguez the answer?

Matt Dominguez is slated to be the everyday third baseman or at least he is to start the season. The 21 year old is only hitting .175 this spring but is a phenom with the glove. He has never played an inning at AAA so he might simply be overmatched at the plate but his glove is better than any other option they have. His minor league numbers aren't all that impressive either. He has shown the ability to hit for a little power but not much patience at the plate. He has a lot to learn and will be doing so at the MLB level. Is this the right thing to do to a 21 year old? Would the the Marlins be better off going with someone else and let Dominguez start in AAA? I guess we will find out soon enough.

Probably not, if you look at the track record of young third basemen. Former can't-miss prospects who you thought could hit at the major league level ultimately couldn't hack it. Andy Marte, Dallas McPherson, Andy LaRoche, Brandon Wood, and Sean Burroughs come to mind. And having not shown much patience at the plate is a huge red flag in this particular case.

Dominguez will not be on the Opening Day roster as he was sent to the minors today. Smart move by the Marlins but now they are likely stuck with Wes Helms at third.

Marlins prospect third baseman Matt Dominguez suffered a fractured left elbow when he was hit by a pitch in a minor league game Friday.
Tough break for the kid. Marlins president Larry Beinfest said a preliminary X-ray revealed a fracture at the tip of the elbow and that the 21-year-old was being taken to a doctor for further examination. Though Dominguez struggled with the bat during spring training, he's still the best position prospect in the Marlins' system at the moment.
Bummer! Hope this doesn't put him out for too long and slow his development

Honestly, it might have been a blessing in disguise. Personally I felt that the Marlins were making a huge mistake even considering someone like Dominguez at this stage. He won't ever be a star with his bat, but he could be capable. Couple that with his glove and he would have no problem keeping an MLB job. Maybe the injury will cause the Marlins to slow down a bit with him and let him get some AAA experience this year without having him ready to knock at the door.
