Marlins Marlins have the HOTS for a rusty Penny

Source: Marlins making run at Penny - MLB News - FOX Sports on MSN

The Marlins were among the most serious suitors for right-hander Brad Penny as of Friday night, a major league source told FOXSports.com.

Penny was released by the Red Sox on Wednesday, after going 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA in 24 starts.

Penny, who has more than $1 million remaining on his existing contract, is expected to clear release waivers. At that point, other clubs will be able to sign him for the prorated portion of the major league minimum.
meh, I don't see him being a huge impact, but as we've already discussed a move to the NL would help him at least. I just don't think he'll put the Marlins over the top in the Wild Card race.

Look at the difference Smoltz's era has had since going back to the NL, and Penny has better stuff

Smoltz is a Hall of Famer and knows how to win. Penny is not a Hall of Famer. He may do better, but he will not catapult the Marlins to the Wild Card...which was my point.

There is no guarantee that Smoltz is a Hall of Famer.

he's the only player in MLB history with over 200 wins, over 150 saves, and over 3000 k's. he's also 15 - 4 in the post season with an ERA of 2.65. he's a Hall of Famer.

So? Pete Rose has more hits than anyone, McGwire was the 1st to break the HR mark, they are not in the HOF, so you can't guarantee anyone in hall these days.

Re: Marlins have the HOTS for a rusty Penny

Pete Rose is banned from baseball and the writers don't vote for McGwire because he hasn't been honest about steroids. Those examples have nothing to do with Smoltz. He is very likely to make it, virtually a lock even.

    Leaderboard Glossary - Baseball-Reference.com

This is another Jamesian creation. It attempts to assess how likely (not how deserving) an active player is to make the Hall of Fame. It's rough scale is 100 means a good possibility and 130 is a virtual cinch. It isn't hard and fast, but it does a pretty good job.
A decent comparison player is Dennis Eckersley (starter/closer), who is already in the HoF.

    Hall Of Fame Statistics
    Player rank in (·)

    Black Ink Pitching - 8 (292), Average HOFer ≈ 40
    Gray Ink Pitching - 130 (130), Average HOFer ≈ 185
    Hall of Fame Monitor Pitching - 172 (32), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
    Hall of Fame Standards Pitching - 34 (104), Average HOFer ≈ 50

172 vs. 167 HoF Monitor. He's got a Cy and WS title, too.

So? McGwire didn't fail a steriod test last time I checked, and he used andro which legal by MLB at that time when he used it.

And who knows who comes out of Smoltz, we all thought of the same with Clemens, and you saw what happened, so their is no guarantee.

you don't have to convince me about McGwire; I was just stating why writers say they wont' vote for him.

And I'm just stating that you can't just assume a guys is going to be a HOF based on baseball reference and his numbers these days.

that stuff I posted is from Bill James, not baseball reference...it just happens to be on baseball reference, but they state where the info is derived from.

barring something scandalous like that, Smoltz will be there.

Whether or not you think McGwire should be in the hall of fame is irrelevant to the fact that people aren't voting against him because of his stats.

Agree or disagree with it, McGwire's not in because of the steroid stigma surrounding him.

Because Smoltz isn't in the middle of the roid scandall and because he is not banned from the game for betting on games McGwire and Rose are irrelevant examples.

Smoltz is easily a hall of famer.

    Clemens isn't even eligible yet.

The steroid thing is a completely different debate.

The fact remains, Smoltz has not been even accused of steroids like some of the others.

I don't know how anyone could think he's not a hall of famer.
