Marlins Construction begins on new Marlins stadium

Construction on Marlins' new retractable-roof stadium begins - MLB - CBSSports.com Baseball

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins and representatives from Major League Baseball broke ground Saturday with South Florida officials on the team's new, retractable-roof stadium in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, saying the long-awaited ballpark will capture the city's youthful spirit and the attention of baseball fans across the globe.
I still don't know how a team who struggled to fill the stadium even when they were winning the World Series managed to get a new stadium.

Unbelievable. My uncle lives in the area of whatever they're calling the current Marlins ballpark nowadays, and he goes every so often, since tickets are cheap and they never sell out. He's always been a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, but just being able to see a team cheap must be nice.

I just can't believe that they get to build a new stadium...they've never had any success attendance wise where they are.

The organization wanted to stay in Florida, and if they wouldn't have gotten a new stadium, they would have moved.

The organization wanted someone else to pay for a stadium, and someone else did.

Absolutely. But if you're the city of Miami or the state of Florida....you already have the Rays who actually draw fans now. The Marlins don't bring in THAT much money, and now they're getting a stadium at least partially paid for by the city/state?

I think it was a waste. They should of moved somewhere to stay in the NL East. I just can't believe the stadium was approved for this team. Everyone knows how bad the attendance is.

I heard Loria was in favour of going back to Montreal if he didn't get the stadium.

...I just noticed this today....When did they start calling the stadium they're in currently "Land Shark Stadium? I mean, that's gotta be their 7th stadium name in 10 years or something.

Ever since Jimmy Buffett bought a piece of the LOLphins and got to rename the stadium after his own brand of beer.

I should add that the Marlins aren't even the Cuban population's favorite baseball team.
