Marlins Marlins sign top draft choice

The Marlins announced the signing of the team's No. 1 draft choice, catcher Kyle Skipworth, on Wednesday. He received a $2.3 million signing bonus.

Skipworth, a left-handed hitter, was the 2008 National Gatorade Player-of-the-Year playing for Patriot High School in Riverside, Calif. He hit .543 with 13 homers and 47 RBI in 30 games. He had hits in 18 straight games, a California record, and reached base in 25 consecutive games.

"We are especially pleased to that we were able to get a deal done with Kyle in a timely manner," said Jim Fleming, the Marlins' assistant general manager and vice president of player development and scouting. "Kyle is an immense talent, and we look forward to getting him started in our system."

The 6-3, 195-pound Skipworth was the sixth overall pick in the draft.
