ORIOLES 5, MARLINS 3
at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
monday, March 5

Marlins at the plate: After being shut out for six innings, little-used second baseman Jason Wood got the visitors on the scoreboard with a two-out double to left field. That scored Reggie Abercrombie, a project in center field and the only Marlin with two hits. The Marlins then loaded the bases and shortstop Luis Hernandez let in a run with an error. Paul Hoover scored a run with a single in the eighth.

Orioles at the plate: Kevin Millar's two-run double sparked a four-run second inning. Ramon Hernandez drove in one with a double, and Jay Payton capped the inning with a run-producing triple. Hernandez's single drove in another run in the third inning.

Marlins on the mound: Lefty Chris George, subbing for Ricky Nolasco, who was scratched with back spasms, was touched for four runs on four hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.

Orioles on the mound: Left-hander Adam Loewen, hopeful of improving his 6-6, 5.37 ERA debut last season, pitched two shutout innings Monday, striking out five, walking one and allowing a hit in throwing 21 strikes among his 34 pitches. Loewen struck out four in a row during one stretch and ended the second inning with a strikeout after permitting a walk and hit. Jeremy Guthrie and Jim Johnson also pitched two scoreless innings each, with Guthrie surrendering one hit and Johnson two. Danys Baez closed out the victory.

Grapefruit League records: Orioles 4-1; Marlins 1-5

Up next: The Orioles play the Cardinals on Tuesday at Fort Lauderdale Stadium at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Steve Trachsel will start for the Orioles; fellow righty Chris Carpenter will go for the Cards.
