Do you remember, 1.2

Rate this Entry
Back in 1997, Cleveland called upon a 22 year old pitcher to help them in the regular season. Turns out, he also helped them get to the World Series with solid pitching against the Yankees and then the Marlins. His career plummeted after the World Series in 1997, his top prospect status quickly becoming lightning in a bottle and seemingly he was done for good. That was until his brief tenure in Atlanta..

Do you remember once heralded prospect, Jaret Wright? If you didn't follow baseball in 1997, you probably have no idea. But the talented pitcher was forced to play early in the big leagues due to a variety of injuries to the Cleveland pitching staff. He finished the season with a solid 4.38 ERA but more importantly, earned a spot in the staff for the playoffs. He went 3-0 in the playoffs, including 2 wins against the Empire, and posted a 2.92 ERA against the Marlins. But following Cleveland's demise to the one and done fishies, Jaret Wright regressed and fell completely off the map. He was signed by the Padres in 2002, but was waived the following season after he continued to perform very miserably.

In 2004, Wright became a starter for the Atlanta Braves after he was claimed in 2003. He went on to post a career year by going 15-8 and posting a 3.28 ERA. He could not repeat past postseason success as the Houston Astros lit him up in two starts. Because of his one year of excellence, the Evil Empire, a team he once beat soundly in the postseason, handed him the biggest contract he had ever received. He only made 40 starts and most were quite forgettable. Wright was dealt to Baltimore for Chris Britton, but did not make much of an impact. He was last seen in the Majors in 2008, working out for the Pirates.

A once heralded prospect that threw in the upper 90's, Wright went through a lot of early success but also a lot of injuries (chronic shoulder pain and later Tommy John Surgery).

I'll bet you didn't know that Jaret Wright appeared so promising in his rookie year that in the offseason Indians GM John Hart refused to trade Wright to the Expos for Pedro Martinez. Oops!

To think we only got Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. What could have been!

I also remember lots of Yankee fans loving the signing of Wright, same with Pavano. Silly Yankee fans. I miss those days of the Yankees making terrible deal after terrible deal. Now they just sign players for too many years and too much money.
