it's not an argument; it's how steroids work. Steroids alone will not increase your muscle mass. Steroids allows the body to recover quickly from bouts of exercise (such as weightlifting), which in turn will allow a person to work out more often and at a higher level than a person who did not take steroids. If you took steroids and sat on your ass all day, you would not get stronger. It's how Bonds was able to play at a higher level as he got older and as his body should have been slowing down. He took steroids to help his body recover quicker from the daily grind of MLB.

He's supposed to notice the rapid muscle growth, the head swelling (though that could get by due to the massive ego we're dealing with here), the shrinking of the testicles, and the massive mood swings (though that also was par for the course prior to Barroid). If he didn't, he would be entirely ignorant of his health, which no professional athlete is. Since he did notice (almost anyone taking steroids would), didn't say anything, and didn't stop taking the substances, it suggets that he had knowledge of what he was taking, and was taking it intentionally to improve his performance.

The question is not if steroids work or not. They do. The real question is if the muscle gain from steroids is really all that useful in baseball, as opposed to a sport rampant with steroids, football.

    1) More muscle would give a player to hit a ball harder. Hitting the ball harder could mean the difference between a homerun and a flyout on the track.
    2) As has been said before on this thread, steroids allow the body to recover rapidly from exercise. In other words, they're great for that time in August when everyone is slumping because they're tired.
    3) Football is rampant with steroids?! The NFL has a FAR tougher steroid program than MLB, and it has been in place for much longer. In fact, I think Congress used the NFL's policy as an example that they wanted MLB to follow during the steroid hearings.

bat speed also plays a role in how far a ball will go...

not necessarily...by that logic a pitcher would be able to throw the ball harder and faster, but so much of that is physics. lever, torque, etc.

It's similar with hitting. The faster a pitch is thrown and the faster the swing is will make the ball go further, too. Notice how when some players come to ST after doing too much lifting / gaining muscle mass, they have trouble throwing or get injured.

Congress cited the NFL's steroid policy because few people test positive for steroids in the NFL.

That does not mean the NFL's steroid program is good at all. It should tell you something that Bill Romanowski admittedly roided for much of the tail-end of his career (when NFL steroid testing has been "At its toughest") and never tested positive.

A little bit about the physics from a kid in high school and Saber, and mofo. Fun.

    http://www.strike3forums.com/forums/...ead.php?t=8986

Not complete of course, I remember there being another factor (as the momentum of the bat and the force provided by the arms factor in, but how much?) and the curveball, according to Saber, is because it's not a perfect sphere. Ask him about this stuff, I can't help.
