    One Word: Mediocrity.

What does competitive balance mean to you? Higher turnover of playoff teams? There is an easy solution for that: Add more playoff spots. Not just one or two, Let's let the whole league into the playoffs, and then the competition would be balanced. In fact, let's not even have playoffs! I suggest we don't even keep score of the games. Then all competition will be balanced.

Don't you think the term competitive balance is kind of oxymoronish? I mean, in a competition you'll have a winner and a loser, anything else and it wasn't much of a competition. Rather, it was more like an agreement. Does any balance exist between the winner of a competition and the loser?

All joking aside, I don't believe that a salary cap directly yields competitive balance. If you awarded an extra four playoff spots in MLB (like the monument to human-kind that is the NFL ) then MLB might have the competitive balance you're looking for.
