That's a steal. He could be a 4-game fluke, but he could also be their new Scott Kazmir.

I thought Shapiro was supposed to be frugal? $36 million for Happ?

It dawns on me that all these sabermetric-leaning GMs do is sign B-list free agents to way too much money because X metric will declare Y free agent to be one of the more under-the-radar players in the game. It's what nerds do. I still can't believe Andrew Friedman of all people thought it was smart to give Brandon McCarthy 4 years and $48 million, whereas if Ned Colletti made that same move, he would have been crucified for it.

I don't usually fall into the "too much money" camp, sports finance is a totally different animal, but I even I think that is a lot for Happ.

Kind of a real life Crash Davis type...Mike Hessman is retiring after 19 seasons of mostly minor league ball. I saw him quite often during spring when he played for many years with Atlanta and Detroit. He currently holds the minor league HR record with 433 surpassing the 78-year-old record set by Buzz Arlett of the Oakland Oaks in 1937. He hit just 14 in the majors spread in five seasons with extremely limited play. He was a member of the 2008 Bronze medal winning US Olympic team in Beijing.
