    Thumbs Down Pitch framing

With "pitch framing" becoming the sabermetric statistical fad of choice it's gotten me really thinking about this whole thing.

The fact that we have an advanced metric that basically amounts to how good the catcher is at convincing the umpire that a ball is a strike is only more of a reason we need to utilize technology more to more accurately call balls and strikes.

Amen. I hated watching the Reds vs Glavine and Maddux when they would get 6-9 inches off the plate and no one else would get anything f'ing close.

Yeah, I am not sure the league really wants to encourage a stat out there that should be given the acronym FOTU..Fooled The Umpire.

I can't point fingers at nitpickers cause I do it myself at times.

I hear that Mach, I am leery of them as well. My niece snickers at me when we go to a game cause I check the umps names to see if there may be one that tends to have past "issues".

People would argue 'HUMAN ELIMENT!!!!1' but I agree.

When you have the chance to get everything else right, why not balls and strikes?

"human element" (and "tradition") are the most asinine reasons to resist change for the better.

Besides, you don't even have to take the human umpires out of it. They're the ones that'd be using the technology.

just out of curiousity... legit question, not trying to be a dick... how would you allow the umpires to use this technology, without slowing the game down past the paint drying stage that it already is? would they have something hand held that tells them immediately? would somebody be sitting in a booth somewhere watching a tv with a strikezone, that posts ball or strike within a second?

    Re: Pitch framing

It would be the official in the "booth" I would think that would be best suited to call down to the home plate ump. They need some sort of walk-talkie system to make the call down quick.

If it's anything other than something that can tell them what it is instantaneously I would not be for it. (I don't like the idea of balls and strikes being up for challenges, for example)

    Re: Pitch framing

Technology, ha! Football still has 60-year old umpires carrying poles attached by chains to measure whether the arbitrarily spotted ball has crossed a line.
