    Re: Pitch framing

Why do I get the feeling that this discussion of pitch framing as a "fad" wouldn't come up if Rene Rivera and/or Yasmani Grandal were still catching for the Padres?

Why do I get the feeling you wouldn't have chosen to smugly contrast Grandal and Kemp's performance today had Grandal not hit 2 HRs and 8 RBIs against baseball's worst team to date?

You say that as if Padres fans weren't declaring their team won the trade by the first week of the season.

But if you people insist that the actual comparison should be Kemp vs Crawford/Ethier based on the notion that the Dodgers didn't HAVE to trade Kemp and he had no say in the matter of moving to left field, then, sure, the Dodgers lose the trade everytime.

If Rivera was good at pitch framing as a Padre he lost it somewhere along the line.

I just think the "officials in the booth(s)" could use the pitch track grids and cameras to review on average how accurate the umpires are with their calls and adjust accordingly. Whether that means probation, sending them back to umpiring school, demoting or even firing if they make
an egregious habit if missing calls.

In my view one of the main problems with balls and strike is due to many umps having their "own idea" of what the strike zone is instead of what the rule book says. I don't have much beef about the high/low of strikes as that has continuously been changed, it's the side to side off the plate strikes that baffle me.

You troll the UT forum enough you should know some are already questioning it.

But I suppose if you cherry pick the homers out of the bunch you can say they all have declared it a win.

You talk about pitch framing being a statistical fad, yet your brethren insist the human element "Pitchers hate throwing to him" has quantifiable value.

    Re: Pitch framing

Look at how tough a time Kershaw is having compared to last year.

There are rumblings that he hates throwing to Grandal.
Greinke is off to his best start of the season since his '09 Cy Young year, and Grandal has caught all 6 of his starts. Clearly, Greinke must hate throwing to Grandal, too.

    Re: Pitch framing

Kershaw's given up 5 runs today throwing to his personal catcher Lellis. But let's keep blaming Grandal iinstead.

He's had shitty BABIP luck but having your catcher stab at pitches doesn't help either.

It's the same catcher Kershaw was pitching to last year.

Technically you are correct, though, even if not for the motivation you want to give me in your strawman approach.

Had Grandal not been traded I likely would not have heard/read about "pitch framing" ad neusum in sports articles and discussions alike over the course of the entire off-season and as a result probably would not have learned (or at least not yet, perhaps) that there's a growing sense of value in a statistic that shows how good the catcher is at convincing the umpire to suck at his job.

    Re: Pitch framing

#Dodgers AJ Ellis said HP ump Mike Winters told him "Your presentation wasn't good" on ball/strike calls. Set Ellis off, led to ejection.

So the umpire basically admitted he based his calls on Lellis being a shitty pitch framer.
