Thumbs Up Wow, ratings in this playoff's will take a huge hit now....

    AND I LOVE IT!

No Yankees, No Red Sox, No World killers Philly! What a crazy last day of the regular season and even crazy first round of the playoffs.

I hope this actually raises interest in Baseball as a whole. But there goes the big time ratings.

At this point. I'm hoping for a Detroit/Milwaukee WS.

It won't really raise more interest, because let's face it the majority of fans in those big markets are team fans not baseball fans as a whole. It does help though in giving the middle and low payroll team fans a little more hope that they can manage to get into the big dance.

I don't think anyone called them not real. Toby just said that a majority of them are not real baseball fans. Meaning they won't continue to tune in because their teams are out.

I for one can say that I continued to watch in 98, 03, 07, and 08 after the Cubs were eliminated.

I don't think it's really fair to single out the NY and Boston fans as not being real baseball fans.

I think every team has their diehards then the larger group that cares more about the team than the sport. But because there are so many (by comparison) on the Yanks and Red Sox bandwagons their team-only crowd stands out more.

That being said, this concept will still make it hurt the ratings....but I don't care.

I feel ya, Leo. But I really don't think anyone singled out NY or Boston fans on this. (at least on this forum)

But there is truth that ratings will drop because neither are in the postseason anymore.

As a fan of a small market club, reds, I love when the big market clubs lose. I say nothing about their fans because they don't like the game, just their team and thats fine.

I personally like most sports for the competition and story lines. NYY and BOS loses are more compelling than their winning because its always "SOMEONES FAULT"

In a hugely team sport, its always someones fault when they don't succeed. (SEE A ROD)

Its hilarious to see teams and their fans try and figure out which player is to blame the most.

With notable exceptions being teams with a compelling story line, like the 03 Cubs team that was five outs away from their first World Series in God knows how many years.

    A) I don’t believe the words Red Sox fans or Yankees fans was anywhere in my post. So, anyone that feels ‘called out” better check yourself.

    B) I may not be as much of a numbers guru as others but aren’t LA, NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston considered large cities in this country? MLB just lost many viewers by virtue of a portion of those large audiences no longer interested now that their team is out of it. I don’t believe I said anything about this being some horrendous crime or not true in smaller areas, but are the ratings going to severely drop because the 2,000 Devil Rays fans (as everyone loves to joke about) are no longer watching? However, a half million here and a million there certainly will hurt the ratings.

    C) There are team fans and there are SPORTS fans, the people that watch their favorite SPORT no matter the competitors involved, but they don’t out number those that do follow one favorite, this is true of any sport not just baseball. Besides there are quite a few that frequent this forum that don’t even live in a ML baseball market and yet follow it intensely and a few that do live near a team but at least follow a few others or the sport in general. This small little board though does not represent the whole of viewers and with those major market teams being eliminated it is just basic fact that the ratings will not be as high.

    D) Just for the record I don’t particularly feel that the smaller markets have better stories than the large markets, seems to me just about every year there are good stories. As much as I root against the Yankees, I was choked up when the Yanks won the WS after Torre had battled cancer. As much as I didn’t care for Posada’s whining earlier he eventually took his lot and managed to have some key moments. He has had a good career and for the most part kept his nose to the grindstone and out of scandals, if you didn’t get choked up or at least felt for the guy during his interview, that this is probably it for him, at least as a full time player, then you’re pretty damn heartless.

I concur. There are many fans of those teams that are just bandwagon fans or think it's cool to be a fan of those teams, but aren't really fans of baseball in general. Yes, it's not the case with all of them. No one said it was, but they have the most bandwagon fans out of all of the teams.

I don't care who wins now except Texas. I want Texas to lose.
