BS Awards: NL Rookie of the Year

Conversely, this one is loaded.. with a couple of top candidates, but a lot of rookies made a big impact for playoff contenders. It was a real good year for the future of the NL.

Initially, I came up with 20 options. So I cut that back drastically, just cause. But 20. 20! And I think there were more decent options! Good times.

Buster Posey has been a beast offensively and defensively. Can't believe a rookie like this is handling one of the best staffs in baseball. Plus he as practically caught Heyward offensively while playing in less games.

My newfound appreciation for a shut down closer is why I voted for Axford. Yeah, yeah, I know Parker Posey will win it.

    She's hot.

I want to vote for Neil Walker, for just coming out of nowhere. I'm sure he'll be traded in 2-3 seasons.

Posey! For the same reasons that LTR stated!

Posey sure has come on strong, but Heyward has put up numbers the entire season and without his bat in the early part of the year the Braves wouldn't have even been in the picture.

Heyward has disappeared this month when they needed him the most.

Those of you voting for Buster Posey, are you aware that the kid only has a .368 OBP? I know he's batting over .300 with a lot of hits and some decent power productivity but how are his statistics anywhere close to Jamie Garcia? Garcia posted a 2.70 ERA, a solid 1.32 WHIP, and a .619 Winning Percentage. He also has some decent strikeout numbers.

No brainier for me, Jamie Garcia gets my vote.

Since when was a .368 OBP considered bad?

    That's a bad thing?

Robin Yount's career OBP was .342 and he's in the Hall of Fame.

The 2.70 ERA is awesome. The 1.32 WHIP is good but not outstanding. The .619 Winning Percentage is a team stat.

But that's not meant as a slight on Garcia because he'd be my vote if it wasn't for Posey. But to suggest it's not even close is a bit extreme.

Cardinals aren't in the playoff hunt either.

Posey is hitting over .300, slugging over .500, and he's a rookie catcher. You could even say he's had a better rookie year than Joe Mauer's rookie year. He's made a far bigger impact than Garcia, despite Garcia's solid numbers.

That shouldn't matter. This is an individual award.

Re: BS Awards: NL Rookie of the Year

It does for me, if a rookie has a significant impact on a team being in contention, that's bonus points. Especially in a close race. The giants aren't in this position if they're still using a Molina.

Re: BS Awards: NL Rookie of the Year

But that's like Jack Elliot citing Garcia's win percentage and the people in the AL Cy Young thread arguing for CC Sabathia and against King Felix. It's a team accomplishment.

Only, in this case, it's a lack of team accomplishment. The Cardinals aren't in the race, but it's not because of Jaime Garcia.

If Buster Posey put up this kind of production for the Pirates it shouldn't take away from the argument for him.
