again, dont bring robbie alomar into this discussion. its not a valid comparison between the two. and again, many people just dont care about the mets. and then theres the fact that the mets have many more problems than Carlos Beltran not hitting well. He is earning a pass because the rest of the team is struggling and he is taking responsibility for his failures. If you take responsibility for your failures and dont pout and hold yourself accountable, you will get a longer leash before the fans get sick of you.

and bonilla wasnt exactly easy on the press much, so they painted him in a negative light. He may be a better person than alomar, but he wasnt good with the media.

Is beltran a disappointment? sure. But should he be getting ragged on and such to a large degree? naw, not really.

I am bringing Alomar into this discussion because he got lot of crap with the Mets since Day 1. He brought it upon himself, but the fans and the media expected way too much out of him. I thought Alomar had decent numbers with the Mets in his first year. I just wonder why there is a double standard with guys like Alomar and Bonilla yet Beltran is being treated with kid gloves.

again, almomar= bad person, total jagoff. bonilla=bad with the media, almost bonds like at times with people, though he was more prone to acts of decency. Beltran= good guy.

do i need to repeat it any more? plus, as generalismo said, he was injured. You give them more of a pass. plus he never looked like he was jaking it that bonilla or alomar were accused of doing at times in their careers.

Alomar? Man, don't get the NY Media started on him. I can dig up some newspaper clippings of the Alomar signing, and he wasn't liked from day 1.

BOSTON -- The New York Mets beat the New York Yankees to the podium. While the Yankees kept trying to sign one of the year's prestige free agents Tuesday, the Mets got themselves a future Hall of Famer.

The Mets hooked up with the Cleveland Indians in an eight-player trade that brings 12-time All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar to New York. Meanwhile the Yankees' slow bid to sign slugger Jason Giambi inched forward when the first baseman took a physical for the team in Tampa.

"When you have a chance to get a Roberto Alomar, you take it," Mets general manager Steve Phillips said. He sent Cleveland speedy, powerful outfielder Matt Lawton, super center-field prospect Alex Escobar, middle reliever Jerrod Riggan and two players who will be identified Thursday.

Alomar, 33, hit .336 with 20 home runs, 100 RBI and 30 steals last season in another remarkable year that included his 10th Gold Glove Award for defensive excellence.

Alomar's popularity matches his singular ability.

"I'm going to need a flak jacket when I get off the plane," new Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro said of Tuesday's step in the Indians' offseason cost-cutting to change a power-driven team to one built on youth and speed.

Shapiro made moving Alomar his first trade, a blockbuster that started a parade to the podium at the Boston hotel where baseball is holding its annual winter meetings, which end Thursday.

Phillips said Alomar enhanced his lineup and dramatically upgraded the club's defense once second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo moves to third base to accommodate Alomar.

Alfonzo prefers to stay at second, but "with a chance at Alomar, I had to make the deal," Phillips said.

Seattle and Cleveland were the only playoff teams involved in the flurry of trades Tuesday. Cincinnati, San Diego, Florida, Detroit and the Chicago Cubs also got into the act, looking to cut costs or improve personnel.

Dmitri Young and Juan Encarnacion were the best of the rest of the players traded, and they were dealt for each other, Young to the Tigers, Encarnacion and a reliever to the Reds.

"I expect there will be more (activity today)," Tigers general manager Randy Smith said.

Okay, this is when they signed him. I'll look for a paper between May and June, to see how opinion on Alomar changed. I remember the Post tearing him a new one.

April 30th, same year. Not even May yet!

It is notable that [Roberto Alomar]'s modest ascension has occurred while batting leadoff, a position he has publicly embraced. But Alomar would probably prefer to hit in the third slot. Over the last five seasons, Alomar hit .278 with a .332 on-base percentage and 12 homers in 547 at-bats as a leadoff man, and .324 with a .408 on-base percentage and 62 home runs in 1,658 at-bats in the third slot.

Alomar offered a glimpse of the player he is supposed to be during the six-run sixth inning that propelled the Mets to a 9-6 victory over the hapless Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Milwaukee used the left-hander Ray King to face Alomar with a 5-2 lead and runners on second and third because Alomar had only 4 hits in 37 at-bats as a right-handed batter. He singled on the first pitch.

While Alomar bats better left-handed than right-handed (.321 to .301 in the last five seasons), the disparity with the Mets (.317 to .132) has been shocking. Alomar even bunted from the right side with a runner on second and the Mets trailing by two runs in the eighth inning against the Cardinals last Wednesday, an indication of his discomfort.

    The Times again..July 9th:

Alomar was not especially close with shortstop Omar Vizquel, his equally stylish double-play partner in Cleveland. Vizquel said this spring that Alomar kept to himself in the Indians' clubhouse. Alomar still does that sometimes with the Mets, but his new teammates say he is friendly and gregarious, especially with the other Spanish-speaking players.

Mets pitcher Al Leiter played with Alomar in Toronto in the early 1990's. He said Alomar had told him he wanted to be a Met for the long haul when they became reacquainted this spring. Leiter understands the complexities and demands of playing in New York but does not know if they are wearing on Alomar.

The Mets have not resumed talks with Alomar about a contract extension -- they can exercise a club option for next season, but Alomar could then demand a trade -- and Alomar does not want to blame the uncertainty for his struggles. He says that he wants to stay in New York and that his biggest adjustment has been the scrutiny by fans and the news media.

The Press was surely disappointed and fed up with him by the time he left. July 1 2003:

Mets End One Sad Story With a Trade of Alomar

The Mets finally succeeded yesterday in shipping the underachieving second baseman Roberto Alomar out of New York, receiving three minor leaguers from the Chicago White Sox in return. Though Alomar hardly performed as expected during his season and a half with the Mets, many around the team expect that he will quickly become himself again.

The Mets, who passed the midpoint of the season Monday, made the deal with the White Sox by agreeing to pay the rest of Alomar's 2003 salary, about $3.75 million. The Mets need prospects, and they have other second basemen who can fill in.

After the Mets began to shop Alomar around earlier this season, [Jim Duquette] said there were at least a half-dozen teams that immediately showed interest. By last Friday, before the Mets' embarrassing four-game sweep by the Yankees, trade discussions became serious.

And the last one, to underline on the mood of the city regarding Alomar:

[Steve Phillips] interviewed Willie Randolph, the Yankees' third-base coach, for the manager's job yesterday. He also made what he said was an obvious roster decision. He exercised the $8 million option on second baseman Roberto Alomar's contract. Alomar, who was acquired last winter, was at the center of the Mets' redesign, but his failures were among the team's many disappointments.

Phillips said he intended to keep Alomar for the 2003 season. In the coming months, the Mets must decide whether they are willing to gamble that Alomar will return to form next season, or trade him and let another team take that chance.

In the closing weeks of the season, he said repeatedly that he wanted to return. Phillips said he believed Alomar was happy in New York despite persistent speculation otherwise. Phillips said that when he informed Alomar's agent that the Mets were exercising the option, the agent did not mention a trade.
