A's What is the best statistic for accessing a hitter's worth?

Title...I am going to ay on base % because you are paid to get on base not to try and jack one outta the ball park every time, so getting on base IMO is the most important thing when you look at a hitter

I would haveto agree that on base % is very important. Getting on base is key to scoring runs and scoring runs is the key to winning.

    I think you mean assessing.

In regards to answering the question, I don't believe in picking one stat to assess a hitter's worth, but if I had to pick one it'd be OPS.

Edit: For those that do not know, OPS is OB% + SLG

ie, if your on base percentage is .390 and your SLG is .510 your OPS is .900

I chose RBI's, cause you can produce runs without getting a hit. C. Lee and M. Ramirez are RBI machines in today's game.

RBIs require effort from other people, though.

Players before you in the line up have to get on base, otherwise the only way you can get an RBI is by hitting a home run.

Re: What is the best statistic for accessing a hitter's worth?

true, good point, but there are so many players that dont hit in the "clutch" or with RISP that have very nice averages and/or OBP. Never score runs.

Re: What is the best statistic for accessing a hitter's worth?

Hitting in the clutch is definitely a good thing to look at, which is why I don't like to look at just one stat.

But, to be fair, if someone has a good OBP but isn't scoring runs, that's probably more the fault of those that bat after him in the line up than the player himself.

He's doing his part, others just aren't hitting him in.

Stats with RISP is a nice indicator.

Anyone considering voting for average, just keep the name Juan Pierre in mind.
