Thread: Round One (Players): Lou Gehrig v. Chipper Jones

  1. #1

Round One (Players): Lou Gehrig v. Chipper Jones

Lou Gehrig (1926-1928, 1932, 1936-1938): Typically the less heralded of the Gehrig-Ruth duo, Lou also had a pristine postseason record. Gehrig’s Yankees were 6-1 in their seven World Series shots. His best series may have been a four game sweep of the Cards in 1928, where he put up a .529-.600-1.118 line over the four games. His overall postseason line was .361-.477-.731 gem. Gehrig scored the game-winning run in eight Yankee wins.

    versus

Chipper Jones (1995-2005): Chipper may be an accumulator, but he has put up superior numbers for a team known to make it to the playoffs and choke it away. Chipper’s first playoff run may be his best. In 1995, he broke on to the scene as he had a great four-game series in the LDS (v. the Rockies, .389-.450-.833). He continued his hot hitting in Cincinnati, going 7-16 with a homerun. He also helped win the only Braves’ title in their historic playoff run by going 6-21 with an RBI in the World Series. Other notable series include the 1996 LCS (.440 BA over 7 games), the 1997 thrashing of Houston (.500 BA and .875 SLG), the 1999 LCS against the Mets (.517 OBP), and a second thrashing of Houston in 2001. He owns one World Series ring and holds an .870 OPS over 20 post-season series.

Feel free to homer vote, there's never criteria on voting or I'd just decide the winner! :P

This, for now, would be the only poll I'd be biased.

I'd have to go with Rivera over Smoltz in that case..oh wait, 2001.

I debating with myself whether to make it more like a real bracket by switching Pettitte and Smoltz' positions in the bracket.

It's impossible not to argue for Gehrig based on his line for seven world series, six of which him and the Yankees won... but I am giving a pity vote to Chipper based soley on the fact that at every level of postseason play, he was one of the few Braves not to piss away the opportunity by forgetting how to play in October.
