Round One (Players): Babe Ruth versus Christy Matthewson

Babe Ruth (1915, 1916, 1918, 1921-1923, 1926-1928, 1932): The Sultan of Swat, while not a compiler due to the playoff format in his heyday, was a prolific playoff performer. In 10 World Series, his team won seven times. He pitched in two World Series, making a total of three starts (including a 14-inning start in 1916) for a 2-0 record and a .87 ERA. He recorded a .326-.467-.744 line in 129 at-bats. His hitting dominance started in 1923, where he put up a 1.556 OPS over 6 games in a World Series win over the Giants. Babe Ruth may be best known for his called shot against the Cubs in the 1932 World Series.

    versus

Christy Matthewson (1905, 1911-1913): If you ignore him having a girly-man’s first name and only having one ring, our oldest player on the “Best of…” list may be one of our best. He was an ace in all four World Series in which he played, making eleven starts. His worst ERA in a series was in 1911, where he had an absurdly horrible 2.00 ERA over 27 innings. His other World Series had ERAs of 0.00, 0.94, 0.95, while winning a ring in the first one listed (1905). He pitched three games in 1905, all CGSHO in games one, three, and five, bringing the Giants a WS over the Philadelphia A’s. He was even a pretty good post-season hitter with a .281 average over 11 games.

As much as I want to vote for Christy's dominance during his short WS tenure, Ruth had more time and he was an offensive monster to boot.

Obviously never saw either player play, but the Babe drank lots more beer (I assume), and thus I vote for him.
