Being the most referred to stat is part of what makes it so overrated.
How else do we place value on them? I don't know, perhaps by looking at stats they have more direct control over instead of the overall team outcome?

Allow me to beat my dead horse on the subject of "wins" as a primary stat for judging pitchers. Matt Harvey had perhaps the most dominant outing of the season (in the majors, not just for the Mets) Tuesday night when he went nine shutout innings. The only baserunner he allowed was courtesy of an infield hit. He struck out 12. The Mets won. Only the Mets won in the 10th inning, so the winning pitcher was Bobby Parnell. Meanwhile, Dillon Gee got the win last Wednesday after allowing nine hits and four earned runs in five innings. So, the "how many wins does he have" crowd thinks Gee threw better than Harvey, right?
I wish the Cubs would just pay the man, damn.
Jacob deGrom: 4 starts, 1.82 ERA, 0-2 record.
In order:
7 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 ER in a 1-0 loss (credited with loss)
6 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 3 ER in a 4-3 loss (credited with loss)
6.2 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 4 K, 0 ER in a 5-3 loss
6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 11 K, 3 ER in a 5-4, 14-inning win.
Joaquin Benoit gives up a game-tying HR and gets a W for his efforts.
Fernando Rodney blows a non-save situation by giving up 4 runs to tie the game. His team scores the next inning and he gets the win despite not pitching in said inning. 1 inning, 4 hits, 2 walks, 4 runs...1 win lol.
Lol @ that. But I'll take a win
and the S3F award for thread I never thought I'd see again is...
But yea wins/loss and how its determined is beyond dumb.
I've bumped this thread routinely every year since 2006 and you never thought you'd see this thread again? :wat:
Especially with Mofo's Awesome Necro Thread Bumping you think anything is left safe?
