By BEN WALKER, AP Baseball Writer
    April 28, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Steve Howe, the relief pitcher whose promising career was derailed by cocaine and alcohol abuse, died Friday when his pickup truck rolled over in Coachella, Calif. He was 48.

Howe was killed at 5:55 a.m. PDT, said Dalyn Backes of the Riverside County coroner's office. The accident occurred about 130 miles east of Los Angeles.

    It's a legitimate question.

According to his past, one could ask "or was he drunk?"

And I was like the Senator. But I didn't even remember a Steve Howe the pitcher, so...

Hate to see anyone go down like that... RIP Howe
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

I feel kind of bad, he was the subject of much mockery from me in the 90's. I do have his autograph though... my dad got it in one of Steve's many trips to court

People should've known with him that MLB didn't do nothing with drugs. How many times was he suspended? Was it 7?

Yeah, seven times in seventeen years, Killah. Banned for life from baseball, but he won his appeal.

I don't remember that part, banned for life only to win an appeal. It's a sad story really. I wonder if MLB did much to help him, though he needed to help himself first. Still though, seven times is way too many and I'm one who believes in 2nd and even 3rd chances.

According to the autopsy, Howe had methamphetamine in his system when he died.

Meth will show on an autopsy if he has used within the past 5 days. That doesn't mean he was necessarily high when he died.

Man, I can't believe I'm defending this guy. What am I doing? This guy was trash in my book during the 90's. May he rest in peace.
