Jeff Kent will look to continue swinging a hot bat when the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers open a three-game series with the surging San Francisco Giants.
Kent became the all-time leader in grand slams by a second baseman when he hit his 13th during the Dodgers' 7-6 loss to Colorado on Sunday. After the game, he was more concerned about his team being swept by the lowly Rockies than any record he might have set.
``This hurts and there are guys in this clubhouse that are a little embarrassed,'' Kent said. ``The Rockies scored a ton of runs in the series and we couldn't keep pace.''
The Dodgers were outscored 29-10 in the series and finished their road trip 2-4.
Kent hit .400 (10-for-25) with two homers and nine RBIs during the trip. He has driven in 85 of his 93 runs this season as a second baseman, a club record for the position. The previous record was 83, set by Charlie Neal in 1959.
``Does it matter?'' Kent said when asked about the records. ``It's all about contributing to a world championship.''
Los Angeles again failed to pick up ground on first-place San Diego, which lost 3-2 in Milwaukee on Sunday.
Opening a nine-game homestand, the Dodgers hope Derek Lowe can build on one of his best efforts of the year when he takes the ball Monday. The 32-year-old right-hander threw a one-hitter in Los Angeles' 7-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.
Lowe credited his dominant effort to moving to the first-base side of the mound during his delivery. He said he has also avoided blister problems by changing his grip on certain pitches.
``I can't tell you the difference,'' Lowe said. ``Not just the results, but the feel of being able to command the outer half (of the plate) against right-handers and inside for left-handers. It's fun to be able to go out there and feel like you have a better chance of having success.''
San Francisco is coming off its fifth straight win, 3-2 over Arizona on Sunday.
Randy Winn scored twice and drove in a run for the second-place Giants, who have won seven of eight to move within 5 1/2 games of San Diego.
