Dodgers in search of a manager

According to Andrew Freidman the team will be open to any candidates regardless of experience. He is the one that gave Joe Maddon his first chance to manage at the ML level.

Reportedly one of the first to interview will be Darin Erstad , other names that have been rumored are Ron Roenicke, Tim Wallach, Gabe Kapler and Bob Geren (who has a close friendship with GM Farhan Zaidi).

Friedman also has long time relationship to Rays third base coach Charlie Montoyo who recently interviewed for the Mariners open manager position.

I think Kapler realizes that going from Director of Player Development to field manager would be a demotion for him, so that is why they have turned their attention to Erstad. Dave Martinez is also in the mix, but I wonder why he didn't get the job in Tampa over Kevin Cash.

It just sounded to me like Erstad being interviewed is just the one going public right now not that they won't still interview Kapler.

As with Davey Martinez from everything I have read from all sides it just appears that the Rays really didn't want to stay with the Joe Maddon mindset, which would also include Davey as they were very much on the same page as evidenced by him then following Joe to the Cubs. The Rays wanted to go in a new direction Freidman, Maddon and Martinez all gone. Maddon being painted with the "bad guy" brush but bottom line Rays wanted them out. Cash would be more easy to groom into that new phase , he has Tampa ties, blah, blah, blah.

Dodgers have interviewed Dave Roberts. LA reportedly not close to a decision, blah, blah, blah. Roberts supposedly will not be back in SD even if he doesn't get this gig.

If Dave doesn't return to SD, and he loses out to Bud Black and Bud chooses Rick Renteria as his bench coach, then for Dave it's either back to being a first base coach or the unemployment line? I've always liked Dave, but that would be an amusing turn of events.

There is so much strangeness going on, it's possible Dave could gamble and sit home for a while.

Yes, it's strange that five years ago, Mattingly and Wallach were the two finalists to succeed Joe Torre and Wallach was the popular outsider choice among fans who didn't want a Torre staff holdover to take over, and today the perception of Wallach is that he's too close to Mattingly.

    Somehow, that wouldn't surprise me.

Gotta think it's Roberts, otherwise it seems like a complete waste of time to have interviewed 8 outside candidates just so they can re-assign their farm director to field manager.

Re: Dodgers in search of a manager

I just don't understand why Black isn't the guy. He managed in the same division, he was Adrian's manager, Roenicke would have stayed, and Roberts would still be on board as bench coach.

Why? So they can put Kapler in the clubhouse where the veteran players will be ignorant enough to forget the fact that he played 12 years in the major leagues and instead perceive him as a front office suit?

Not really. It's due diligence to survey the field instead of just going right away with the in-house guy, even if in the end they determine he's their best option.
