Great pitching matchup tonight with the Dodger Killer facing Brad Penny.

Schmidt has looked like a shell of the pitcher he was in 2003 and '04, when he was arguably as good as any in the National League. The hard-throwing right-hander came into this season 48-20 with a 2.99 ERA and 655 strikeouts from 2002-04. He went 17-5 in '03 and 18-7 last year.

However, he has struggled this year with inconsistency. Schmidt went 3-1 with a bloated 5.08 ERA over his first nine starts, then lost his first two starts in June, allowing a combined 12 earned runs in just nine innings.

Schmidt showed signs of life, going 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 21 strikeouts in his next three starts. But the optimism was short-lived as the 32-year-old right-hander has dropped his last two starts, allowing eight earned runs in 11 innings.
Even as inconsistent as he has been this season, expect Schmidt to bring his A-game against the Dodgers. Schmidt won in his two starts against LA this season.

The Giants can pass the Dodgers in the standings with a series win. LA cannot afford to fall into 4th place if they are to remain in the divisional race.

Ugh, Omar Vizquel of all batters belted a 3-run homer off Houlton.

    Giants won 4-3.

Losing on a homerun by Omar Vizquel? Ouch. It's one thing if Alou or Snow or someone else did it, but the light hitting SS? That has to hurt.

Penny seems to have had a decent start too.

Then out of fairness to the others you will be Slagathor.

Penny was ejected for throwing down his cap. The relievers who have picked up after the starting pitchers have been lately.

He threw a cap and got ejected. I guess that's technically by the rules, but harsh.

Dodgers lost 6-0. Lowe allowed all 6 runs in 4 innings, including home runs by Michael *ucker and Pedro Feliz.

Carlos Perez award of the game goes to Derek Lowe. From tonight's game I can see why Lowe was at times hated by Red Sox fans.

You mean Derek Lowe wasn't worth 10 million and a draft pick? Who knew?

He's got a permanent grace period (unless he joins the Yankees and does well) due to his playoff performance, but still.

Well, at least Lowe is durable (knock on wood). He could be Darren Dreifort, Andy Ashby, or Kevin Brown. But right now, Lowe and Weaver have been way too up-and-down. It also doesn't help that they don't receive run support.

In the past, I would've been lmao at Scott and his fellow Phillies fans when Mesa and the rest of pen blew the game to the Dodgers. But Wagner is definitely no Mesa.

Did you see today's game on FUX? Did you catch that split screen they did with that little Dodger fan? That was classic TV at it's best.

The kid, who was about 4 years old was dressed in Dodger garb and had one of those mini-bats. He was really into the game and matched the batter swing for swing. The commentary from Brennaman and Lyons was great too. If you missed it, you missed a great spot.
