It can be an overrated stat, mariano is clearly the best closer of this generation but according to the save stat Hoffman is better and John Franco should be a HOFer. It can be misleading. All we have to do is look at this season, he's on a record setting pace while Mariano has only 22 yet mariano has pitched better than Rodriguez. By the way, the guy in 2nd place is george Sherrill w/ a 3.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.
Getting the outs is the only thing that matters. Krod has been doing that at a record setting pace while pitching just as good as Rivera. Rivera is the best closer of his generation and that's not debatable but hoffman is right up there with them. The setup guy doesn;t do any work for the closer. The setup man is doing his job just as getting saves is the closer's job.

Rivera is the best of all time and he's been the best this year, Hoffman's poor Octobers distance him from Mariano and as great as Rodriguez has been this year Mariano has been even better.

Rivera has been slightly better this year than Krod and I already said Rivera is the best with Hoffman being a close second. Krod keeps getting the job done which is all that matters.

Yes it is close for Rivera and Hoffman, just not in the postseason.

35th save today for K-Rod with 6 games to go before the All-Star break. Outside chance at 40 saves pre-Break. Unreal.

He broke Smoltz's record for saves before the All Star break.

K-Rod got his 42nd save tonight as the Angels won 14-11 over the Indians!!! He only needed one pitch, very well done.

He wouldn't have gotten a chance if Arredondo did his job. He let a run score and left a runner on second. Krod time!!! Some dumbasses want the Angels, the best team in baseball, to trade Krod now while he has helped them win 42 of 62 games. WOW!

That is exactly why the save stat is overrated. Mariano got a similar save earlier.
