Padres at the plate: Russell Branyan banged his first homer of the spring, a two-run blast following Marcus Giles' leadoff single to open the game. Jose Cruz Jr. launched a solo homer, his first of the spring.

Angels at the plate: Vladimir Guerrero legged out an RBI triple to right center and smoked an RBI single his next time up. Gary Matthews and Garret Anderson delivered RBI singles, Mike Elyward had a two-run triple and Flint Wipke added an RBI double.

Padres on the mound: In his spring debut, David Wells struggled out of the gate, giving up three runs on four hits facing nine batters in two innings, striking out one. Mike Thompson yielded a run on two hits and a walk in two innings.

Angels on the mound: Kelvim Escobar was knocked around early, yielding homers to two of the first six hitters, but gathered himself to finish well in surrendering three runs on four hits in three innings. Francisco Rodriguez and Scot Shields made dazzling spring debuts, each striking out their respective side, and Darren Oliver worked two scoreless innings.

Cactus League records: Padres 3-5, Angels 6-3

Up next: The Padres host the Rockies on Saturday in Peoria. Chris Young, making his third spring start, is expected to be followed by Doug Brocail and Cla Meredith as he faces right-hander Rodrigo Lopez. The Angels face the Mariners in Tempe.
