Angels at the plate: Gary Matthews Jr. hit a solo homer, and Vladimir Guerrero and Chone Figgins each belted two-run homers in the fifth, all off Clay Rapada. The Angels scored three runs with two out in the fourth, when Howie Kendrick hit an RBI single and Jose Molina added a two-run double, both off Neal Cotts.

Cubs at the plate: Matt Murton went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. He hit his first Cactus League homer with one out in the second, launching the first pitch from Joe Saunders to right, then added a two-run, two-out single in the third, and a one-out RBI single in the fifth. Eric Patterson hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Angels on the mound: Saunders gave up one run on one hit -- Murton's homer -- over two innings and walked one. Darren Oliver gave up two runs on three hits and one walk in one inning.

Cubs on the mound: Carlos Zambrano, the Opening Day starter, gave up one hit and struck out four of the seven batters he faced over two innings. Rapada was roughed up, giving up five runs on five hits, including three homers, in two-thirds of an inning.

Cactus League records: Angels 2-0; Cubs 0-2

Up next: The Angels travel to Tucson on Saturday to play the Colorado Rockies. John Lackey will make his first Cactus League start. The Cubs travel to Phoenix to play the Oakland Athletics on Saturday. Wade Miller is slated to start for the Cubs against Dan Haren.
