Astros general manager Ed Wade told Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle that the team has discussed a multi-year contract extension with Wandy Rodriguez.
"It makes all the sense in the world to at least consider it," said Wade. Rodriguez, who turns 32 in January, will be a free agent after the 2011 season, so the Astros would like to buy out at least one year of free agency. Rodriguez made $5 million last season after losing an arbitration case. While the Astros are willing to discuss a multi-year contract with the left-hander, they will continue to go year-to-year with Michael Bourn and Hunter Pence, who don't become free agents until 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Makes perfect sense for the Astros but not so much for Wandy. It all depends on if the money is right. Wandy is a good lefty who has swing and miss stuff. He would definitely be sought after hard next season as a free agent so the Astros need to pony up if they want to keep him beyond this year. If McLane wants to sell this team for twice what its worth, there better be some good players on it!
