Astros declined RHP Doug Brocail's $3.25 million option for 2009.
Something of a surprise. "Doug did a terrific job for us this year," GM Ed Wade said. "He was a workhorse out of the bullpen and brought a solid veteran presence to our clubhouse. Although we’ve declined to exercise the 2009 option, it’s our hope that we can get Doug back here for next season. I have already spoken with him, and he expressed definite interest in being with us." Brocail was worked hard early on and likely suffered in July and August as a result. However, he did bounce back in September, allowing just one run in nine innings, to finish with a 3.91 ERA. He could probably get $3 million or so from another team if he wishes.
Hard to believe the Astros are letting him go. They have been taking on guys like Randy Wolf and LaTroy Hawkins and now letting this guy go? Some team will take him.
