Astros designated RHP Oscar Villarreal for assignment.
Three months into a two-year, $2.85 million contract that GM Ed Wade gifted him with. Villarreal gave up a bunch of homers early, but he had pitched a little better since. Overall, he had a 5.02 ERA in 37 2/3 innings. We can see why the Astros consider him expendable, but they're downgrading in replacing him with Dave Borkowski. At least the decision to overpay him guarantees that he'll clear waivers, so he should be back with the team at some point during July or August.
It was a dumb move to sign him in the first place and now they are stuck with him. Have fun in AAA Oscar!
