Report: Marlins, Mets make Delgado deal

    11/23/2005 9:40:44 AM

It appears that Carlos Delgado is on his way to New York.

The Associated Press is reporting that the Marlins have reached a preliminary agreement with the Mets that will ship the first baseman along with $7 million to the Mets for first baseman Mike Jacobs and pitcher Yusmeiro Petit.

Delgado, who was a free agent in 2004 spurred New York to go the Marlins. He has $48 million remaining on the last three years of his contract.

    More details to follow.

Please get baseball out of Florida period, just doesnt work. So. Fla couldnt careless about baseball.

Although granted doesnt help that the Marlins do this almost every offseason.

    Rotoworld release:

According to John Heyman of Newsday, the Mets and Marlins have reached a trade agreement that will bring Carlos Delgado to New York.
The Mets will reportedly give up young first basemen Mike Jacobs, highly regarded pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit for Delgado and seven million dollars. Delgado is due 48 million dollars over the next three seasons. The deal is contingent upon all players passing physicals and the approval from the commissioners office since money is involved. Delgado hit .301 with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs last year with the Marlins.

Delgado, Beltran, Floyd and Wright make a pretty damn good middle of a lineup. Now if they can get a bullpen assembled, they might win something.

I've read that Wagner likes the Mets more now that they got Delgado (which is funny because didn't they try to sign Delgado last year only to be outbid?)...Wagner has been quoted that his signing is a one-horse race (The Mets are the only team running).

The Mets did try to sign Delgado, what from I can remember they offered the same money and years as Florida with a NTC, but Delgado chose otherwise, maybe cuz Florida backloaded the contract

He chose Florida because he hates one of Minaya's assistants. Brazenard or Brazener or.. something.

There's some undue hate being put on the Marlins managers and owners here... they can't exactly do much when they have a poor fanbase, can't get a new stadium built, are losing money rapidly, and have no certainty in their future. The loss of good players like Delgado and Beckett will hurt, sure, but the team won't be bankrupt and they'll be able to field some good players a few years down the line instead of maybe not even existing down the line because they couldn't afford to keep running.

Players have to be paid and a team has to be run and the money doesn't just shoot out of Loria's ass.

Last firesale worked out in the long run. They are getting good prospects and they still have Cabrera, Willis, Pierre, Castillo and Lo Duca (for now). Mike Jacobs isn't bad either.
